I've got an opportunity to acquire a pair of Kef Carlton III's - mid 80's
vintage floorstanders I gather. I'm going to see/hear them over the
weekend. Had anyone any background info or opinions on them? Any ideas of
their cash value?

Thanks

A lovely midrange and top end, remove the baf wadding and line the cabinets
with 2 inch foam (vitafoam, I think its called, obtainable from market
stalls). This will tighten up the Bass and give definition rather than the
wooliness with the original filling of baf. If the damn things had been
slightly smaller I would have kept my pair - best positioned away from walls
and corners and approx 15 inches off the ground - forget the term
floorstander. Will give many £400-£500 speakers a run for the money, but
don't expect an 'in your face sound' - typically Kef, smooth, detailed and
very musical. Bought mine for £55.00 and would have spent more to get them.
The 111's had a crossover alteration to improve alignment otherwise the 11's
and 111's were the same in all respects. Buy them if the price is right for
your pocket, I doubt that you will be dissapointed.
regards
John

Well, they're sitting in my study as I type - haven't set them up yet. I
can't say I'm taken with the 1970's wood veneer finish but they certainly
look to have plenty of 'presence'. Hopefully I'll get a chance to properly
listen to them on my own system during the week.

Thanks for the advice
