View Full Version : What causes this effect.

I have noticed of late that some bbc I player talk only shows have a gritty
gurgle that almost sings along with the loudness of the speech. Its some
kind of digital effect, yet some files of the same compression type have it
while others do not.
Its as if the max level is going into clipping in a kind of very fast
cyclic fasion.
I did wonder if somewhere the content has been lossy compressed more than
once along the way, making the losses compound each other.
Back in the early days of mp3 you used to hear this effect and on early DAB
half sample rate transmissions as well.
Its irritating once you hear it, you cannot unhear it so to speak!

It might help if you told us *which* particular programs, and how you
access them.

OK Inside Health, the last episode on the I player, but the podcast sounded
better to me, but i suspect was only mono.
I've heeard it when just playing from the embeded object or downloading the
full show from the stream, but no the podcast. Brian

Do you mean you used the Flash plugin with a web browser? (If so, I'll take
windows for granted!)
You may be able resolve this for yourself if you wish by making use of
get_iplayer. That will essentially get you the source file the BBC used.
I can try getting the file for myself. But I don't know if I'd react to it
as you do, and I don't normally listen to it. I find that R4/R4x programmes
vary wildly in sound quality anyway. Made in different ways by different
people.

I've not tried that utility, but the bbc downloader is completely
inaccessible to the blind.
