View Full Version : Seeking a pair of speaker stands

I need a pair of speaker stands.
I'm after something that looks like this:
<http://images.audioasylum.com/usr/y2011/08/50141/speakers.jpg> (i.e
black, square section steel in a design composed of right-angles).
The speakers have a footprint of 20cm wide by 18cm deep, and for
aesthetic reasons the stand needs to match that as closely as possible.
Are there any models I should be looking out for on the second-hand
market?
Thanks,
Daniele

I think probably it ought to be welded. How rigid is that stuff?

More than rigid enough for the job.
I made some for my BBC LS5/8 which need provision for the amp too. The
'proper' stands are far too high for domestic use.
You can cut it by hand, but I use an angle grinder with steel cutoff wheel
in a stand. Which gives a nice square cut with little skill needed.

Will certainly look right, few speaker stands are made that way nowadays.

Not really much harder to separate than assemble. But the design should
ensure all joints are under compression anyway.

It's a nice idea, but to be honest it's more realistic that I will
successfully find something second-hand... hence my question whether
anyone knows of a model similar to the one pictured

Ebay would be the obvious place to look for used speaker stands for the
model you have. Just how often such things come up I have no idea, since
you've not given the make of the speakers.

Are speaker stands generally speaker-specific? I gave the size (a
footprint of 20cm wide by 18cm deep) but if the speaker model helps too,
they are Royd Coniston R speakers.
But I'd be surprised if there were stands made specially for those
speakers.

There may be an optimum height. Varies with the model of speaker.

Yes, me too - although that photo suggests a tight fit, maybe
coincidence. Do reviews list stands they used?
FWIW, they look a bit to me like Heybrook stands.
As others have said - ebay, with a saved search, tight parameters and
email notification. I've got a few things that way - sometimes waiting a
year or more. From a quick look the Linn Kan stands currently listed
don't look far off.

Is ear height tweeter the rule of thumb? I tend to prefer them a little
lower than that.

I can't speak for all, but some makers do supply stands for some models.

Even more reason to make your own.

I'd not be too keen on a speaker which simply sat on a stand. I'd want it
secured in some way - enough to stop a small knock or vibration etc moving
it. And not all would want to screw into the case.
With Speedframe, I used the type with a lip for a shelf for the top of the
'cube' so the speaker sits inside it.

I'd say the best way would be to play with them till you get the very best
mono image. Like you are listening to one central mono speaker.

My other speakers have sat on the same stands for nearly 30 years
without mishap. I think the little spikes help.

Think I'd rather have screws than spikes. ;-)
