VW Aerials?

I know most modern VWs have the stubby aerials that need a 12v supply for
the built in booster , but should a P-reg polo need one as well?
Fitted a sony stereo in a friends car (to replace a factory fit sony) and he
has no MW reception. I'll be checking the aerial connector is secure at the
weekend , but would like to know if the aerial is likely to be causing grief
as well.

Yes.

They have been in use on VWs from the 80s.

The adaptor is less than a tenner from In car express.

Excellent , got to order myself some new speakers as well so I'll get them
at the same time.
