Sony CDX changer problem reading mp3s.
I've just had a Sony CDX-T70MX changer installed in an Audi A6, with an
adaptor to make it compatible with the Audi Concert head unit. When playing mp3 files that I've burned to a CD, I find that the changer will play the mp3 files OK, but if I try to skip to the next track or go back to another one, it just goes back to the first mp3 in the list and starts again. It doesn't seem to recognise folders, either - just plays the mp3s on the discs that are not in folders. Is this something just have to put up with? I know these things happen with mp3 players, but I was wondering if it has anything to do with the method I use to burn the CDs (Roxio Easy CD creator). Any tips or advice appreciated. Ross |

After some communication with Connects 2 (who were knowledgeable and helpful), Sony and the fitting company (more about them later) we found out that early models of this changer DID NOT work correctly with the Connects 2 convertor. In fact, only models after a certain serial number were compatible and offered full track skipping functionality. snip Found my old emails from Connects 2... They originally told me (way back in July 2002 or thereabouts) that units with a serial number below 16955 when paired with some connects 2 adapters were prone to displaying the problems described in your original post. BTW - After finally getting mine sorted out it has worked well for 45000miles worth of listening...(although searching this group will tell you that there are some limitations to MP3 quality that should be remembered when ripping/encoding... e.g. CBR at 256kbps and below is about maximum quality the unit can handle and avoid using VBR... most people seem to use 192kbps CBR) Regards Dave G |

Cheers, Ross Hi Ross, The problem occurs because the Audi head unit wants to know the number of tracks on the disc. We get this information from the TOC info on the Sony changer. On an MP3 ISO disk the TOC contains the number of sessions on the disc, hence if you have written 50 MP3 files in one go ( session ) the adapter reports only one track to the head unit and track 1 is always selected. Sony added some new commands into their latest T70MX software for me which reports the number of playable MP3 files. For the MP3 changer to operate correctly in your car the T70MX needs to have the newer firmware and the adapter needs to be the MP3 version not the normal CD version. The first batch of changers manufactured with the incompatible software have serial numbers up to 19655. I believe that some of the first batch of changers have been re-programmed with the newer firmware, but I have not been given any information on how to identify which ones. I hope this information will help you when you go back to Halfords. TTFN Neil Hope you get things sorted out... Let us know what response you get from Sony... all I got was a "We're aware of an issue and are investigating it" which was a year ago Cheers Dave G |
