modeo speakers upgrade :-)
Hello. Just a quick bit of advice and you seem like a nice helpful group so
here goes ... I have a modeo on a Y. It has the original 6000 HU which I am leaving. All I want to do is replace the front speakers for the moment (actually get someone else to do it). Reading through the archives it would seem i should go for 6.5" (whatever that means - i will look this up:-) and a speaker door panel adaptor thing from halfords to make them fit. Does that seem reasonable? if so then: How much do I need to start spending before I hear an improvement (In other words - what is the value of the original speakers)? Will any 6.5 speakers fit or am I restricted in some way? Any thoughts on suitable brands / models? Should I just get the speakers from halfords and get them to fit it or find a specialist? Cheers -- Darren |

I've got a MK1 1993 L plate mondeo, but AFAIK the speakers are about the
same... the adaptor plate will allow any 6.5" speaker to fit into the door, you can (if you want to cut the door...) fit 6x9 speakers, or you can replace the originals with 6x8s (which tend to be a bit more expensive than normal speakers because they're specially made). The speakers tend to be around 20w, maybe as much as 30w, but I guess this is a maximum rating rather than RMS. Fitting the speakers is as simple as removing the door card (follow the instructions in a Haynes guide) and unscrewing the old speakers, maybe removing the plug that is on the end of the old wires and crimping on new connections. Then just insert the new speakers into the plate, connect em up and install the plate into the door. Easy. Have a good listen to different brands of speakers if possible, everyone will say different speakers are better than others... good luck PB |

Does that seem reasonable? A few years back, I had an R reg Mondeo. I spoke to the car audio guys as I could not afford to do both the head unit and the speakers at the same time. I was told (and did) to upgrade the HU first and to be honest, the improvement in sound quality was significant. I never did get around to doing the speakers before I sold the car but you might want to consider the HU first. |

Although both the HU and the factory speakers are, well, crap, I would always change the HU first. Basically its the internal amp thats really dire on these, and their being no line outs on it to take the signal to an external amp, your stuck with it. Change the HU first. Even a £100 one will sound alot better than what you have now! Tim.. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
