How to fit a New Head Unit?
I've never fitted one before so apologies for any dumb questions.
I've got a Sony MDX C5970R MD tuner which I cannot get out yet because you
need special Sony clips to remove it. But when I do remove it, how do I
install my new Pioneer DEH P77MP mp3 CD tuner?
Do you simply unplug the connector connected to the Sony MD player and plug
in the Pioneer's connector, or are the wires different? If the wires are
different, how do I find out which wire on the Sony does what? (I can't find
my Sony MD player's manual)
TIA.

Depends on the connector used on the Sony. If it's an ISO standard
one then you're fine.
I found this:
http://forum.showyoursound.nl/topic....&TOPIC_ID=3983
I know it's in German but the first post is about my Sony MD player and it
mentions that it's got an ISO connector.
As you have a Rover 214 L reg I'm guessing that
it already has the adapter to convert from the factory connector to
ISO, just make sure you leave it in there,
I remember that when I had the Sony installed the bloke at Halfords asked me
if I wanted to buy such and such connector (which I agreed to) so I assume
he has put an ISO connector on for me.
although you do end up
with a lot of cable behind the unit and you have to try and keep it
out of the way of the rear of the unit due to the close fit to the
metal bracket in the console. (I had a 214 H reg, still had the
factory fitted Philips unit so had to get an adapter to fit my
Pioneer DEH-P3500MP, but they're only around £10 - for the cabling I
managed to pull it through to the left from behind by getting my head
under the glove compartment, great fun).
Thanks for your help.

It's possible that the Sony uses an ISO block, in which case you'll have a
connector cable you can use with the Pioneer. But if the Sony doesn't use
ISO, then you've got a Rover to Sony connector which is of no use to you
now. You won't really know till you get it all out. What you should find is
that the there is a cable out of the back of the Sony unit, and a cable
coming out of the dash, and a cable connecting the two together. The Pioneer
unit if it's anything like my 3500 will have a cable with it that connects
to the back of the unit and has an ISO block on the other end - hopefully
that will plug straight into the connector cable Halfords would have fitted.
It's really pretty simple, the blocks are shaped such that they only fit
together one way so it's hard to make a mistake.

Thanks for your help. I went to a car audio place today to ask if they had
clips to get my Sony out but they didn't and they said use a couple of thin
flat-head screwdrivers so I'll try and get it out tomorrow.
Fingers crossed it'll have an ISO connector on it...

You'll probably also need to get the facia unit out too as the catches for
the Pioneer unit are bound to be different to the Sony one. That normally
involves bending the tags back out from behind the dash, can be awkward but
keep those screwdrivers around as they might help there too

Yeah, I realised this too late because once I'd hooked up the Pioneer it'd
gone dark.
Anyway, the Sony did have an ISO connector on it so it was very painless.
Thanks for your help.
BTW, how the hell do you change the speakers that are in the front doors? I
wrote a Peugeot off a couple of years ago and when I removed the front
speakers from the doors I just canibalised the doors, because I could
basically.
But how do you take all the trim off to get to the speakers so that the when
you put the trim back on it doesn't look like a butcher has just changed the
speakers?

Depends on the car. I'd probably look in Haynes manual for details on doing
this. If Halfords have an open copy then it might be worth checking that it
covers this properly - some of the Haynes books are a bit sketchy for
certain cars, I know the one for mine is supposed to be one of the worst,
but it was OK for my Rover 214 (never messed with the door trim though, just
the engine and electrics).
