Total Newbie - Speaker dimensions?
Hi,
I'm a bit confused, and though this'll probably seem dumb to most of you, I'd appreciate some advice! http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mick.knaggs/spk.jpg This is one of the stock speakers I've just pulled out of the shelf, can somone tell me what size speaker I should be looking for to replace these with some better quality ones? Just a bit confused as to 'cut-out' and actual speaker dimensions.. I'd set my sights on these, but really not sure of sizes/capability. http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/prod...?product=19511 I have a JVC KD G701 which reports 50W X 4.. I'm guessing I should be concentrating on the input wattage of a speaker, rather than the peak? All this RMS/max power/max input..! Also, any links to decent car audio sites would be good. Cheers for any help, M |

What car's it in? Jon *cough* Daewoo Nexia ( on a P ) 1.5 GLi :-) Worth mentioning I have some Clarion in there now, the JVC was way too much for the stock speakers. It's just these damn dimensions I'm getting confused with. M |

Hi Jon, thanks again for your reply. Yeah sorry, it is a saloon - shoulda said. (First saloon I've ever had - a pain to have to sit in the boot messing with the speaker connections rather than dropping the seats!) If so, they're a standard 160mm driver. Sometimes also known as 6 inch, but I'd use the metric measurement, as the Japanese and Americans can't seem to agree on how big 6 inches is.... Jon :-) I presume you saw the jpeg I posted a link for Jon? I'm just trying to decide out of curiosity where the 160mm is taken - best I can do is from the far left to the far right of the screw holes..? Anyway, thanks for your help - at least now I know what size speakers to buy. M |

I've actually just taken another look at your image, and I can't quite tell, but it looks like it might have 4 fixing screws? If so, then it's not going to be a 160mm (which usually have 3), but more likely a 165mm, which isn't especially surprising as the car's effectively a Vauxhall Belmont (which used 165mm eurosize) Rather than worrying about the speaker size, I'd measure the mounting hole. A 130mm mounting hole equates to a 160cm (usually Japanese and American) driver, and 150mm equates to a 165mm (eurosize) speaker. Sony's database lists 160mm speakers for the car, but a 153mm cutout, so I'm not thinking they've probably got things wrong! Well, that gives me even more info, and I'll keep hold of your post and refer to it when I pop the grilles off next. Thanks muchly for your time Jon - much appreciated. Mick. |
