Default Sony CDX-MP40 too bright

Apart from sticking some semi opaque film over the front, does anyone
know how to reduce the brightness of the display ? It is far too
bright at night. I've been through the manual but was hoping that
there might be some 'hidden' method of reducing the brightness. e.g.
pressing some key combinations.

At worst I guess I could get an adapter extension male to female with
wires between and chop whichever one it is that powers the light, and
then insert a bit of circuitry like a variable resistor as long as it
won't get hot, but I'd prefer a simpler and cheaper solution.

Thanks

Some heads have a connection to the vehicle lighting circuir that will
change the lighting to a night setting. No idea whether yours does, but
it might point you in the right direction.
