the cassette is only playing in mono
any ideas I have cleaned heads

How did you clean the heads?

Sometimes a cassette type cleaner will not remove large deposits of oxide.
Best to use cotton bud dipped in iso prop alcohol.

Give it a good rub till no deposits are left.

Also, while you have the lid off , check the wires to the head!
