Does AM (MW, LW) rely on the aerial at all ?

I've heard that aerials are for FM only and that AM has an internal
aerial? Or is this different in car radios?

Both AM and FM require an aerial.
Try unplugging the aerial on a car radio, when it's tuned to an AM signal.
You lose reception.
As a BTW in the days when all car radios were AM only, they still wouldn't
work without an aerial.
