Just about ready to submit preliminary tentative broad financial
proposal for a new amp - the Arcam A85 - when I realised the phono
stage is optional and costs another 110 quid! Are they taking the
p**s?

FFS, don't Arcam understand anything about how hi-fi gets bought.

Me: I want a new amp and it costs 800 quid and I'll I pull a year-long
sulk unless I get it.

Missus: 800 quid! Are you mad! Oh go on then, I'll sell one of the
kids.

Me: By the way, it can't play records..

Missus: £$^%&)&)* ......

Anyway, has anybody seen an A85 for 800UKP *with* the phono stage
included.

Most components you can buy ex-dem or ex-display. In return for letting
someone run it in for you, you can get a good discount and/or a freebie
(e.g. phono stage) thrown in. And a full guarantee - who needs ebay!

Try John Lewis or Richer Sounds.

BTW: I believe that the Arcam A80 does have a built-in phono stage. It
seemed quite nice when I auditioned one. (I finally decided to go for
the Roksan Kandy because it has less in the way of 'flashy' display
electronics.)
