Tivoli Model Two
Our 20 years old kitchen tranny finally gave up the ghost so its now headed
for the parts box in the sky. I went out on a limb took a chance & ordered the Tivoli Model 2 radio (without ever hearing it..very unlike me that) it arrived a couple of days ago. The sound quality is far better than I'd expected, the build quality excels as far as I can see/feel. The controls have a solid & silky action. Has all the in/outs I'd ever want. (The only omission I can see is a 'mono' switch for those poor multiplex signal reas - anyway, I'm now hooked so I've placed an order for the CD unit...I'll post on that later :-) Hopefully someone might give me the subwoofer for Xmas ;-) Mike |

I purchased another Model One for my father a few days ago, and this has now been delivered (gift wrapped for Christmas by Simply Radios!) and my father is very pleased with it apparently. John Lewis in Cheadle are selling the Tivoli range, including the Model One, the Pal, and the complete CD system and are apparently doing good business with these. It is nice to see a niche "hi-fi" product doing good business in the mainstream. Perhaps one day we might see "proper" two channel stereo systems making a similar resurgence. -- Anthony Edwards |

Comparing the Model Two to the Model One I see they now have a front panel selectable Aux position. The Model Two is stereo of course whereas the Model One is monophonic. I haven't noticed any drift problems so far. Its made in China however that's now not a negative comment as many fine audio products are manufactured there. The bass performance belies the size, there are bass ports at the rear of both units, now I'm wondering if the subwoofer add may be overkill? Generally I'm delighted, good value for money for a nice sounding and a seemingly well made product. Mike |

The current Quad range is manufactured in China and the dealer (Vickers Hi-Fi in York) from whom I recently purchased my Meridian 507 CD player informs me that these Quad products are the best selling products that they stock (the only difficulty that Vickers Hi-Fi have with Quad is in keeping up with demand, apparently), and also the concensus seems to be that they sound every bit as good as previous Quad ranges, possibly better. I remember reading a review in one of the American hi-fi magazines (Stereophile or The Absolute Sound, possibly) in which they rated the Quad 909 power amplifier (a derivative of Peter Walker's original 606 current dumping design) as being as good as almost anything manufactured in the USA. I actually mean to write to the Chinese Ambassador to United Kingdom to congratulate his country on such an excellent achievement, at some point. -- Anthony Edwards |
