Cheapjack DVDPs from Lidl.....

For the first time in my life I went into the local branch of Lidl (cheapo
German supermarket) this morning for a £38 DVDP for my son. (He's addicted
to them). None on display so I asked a girlie who was shelf-filling nearby -
she whisks me off to another little feller who says 'black or silver?' and 2
minutes later I've got a DVDP for chump change spec'd like a good 'un - see:

http://www.lidl.co.uk/gb/index.nsf/p...5.p.DVD_Player)

Smiling faces all round, much arch whispering about 'multiregion' - even the
checkout girl has bought 4 of 'em herself for Xmas prezzies apparently! A
thoroughly satisfying 'Retail Therapy' session - most pleasant!

(My son tells me that a store that had had 120 of these in opened at 8
o'clock and had sold them all in 20 minutes this morning, if you go in for
one and there's none on display - ASK!)

Why bother to post this? - Before I went over to the town, just to 'double
check', I phoned the local hifi/appliance store and spoke to my *own*
audiophile mate Shiny Nigel who quoted me full fekkin' retail on a Panasonic
player with no sign of any discount whatsoever offered - and I've spent a
few thou in that place in the last few years!

**** 'em! - From now on I will buy anywhere I can for the cheapest deals -
eBay, the Net, whatever (especially if it's digital)!

(They say the Japs killed the Brit motorcycle industry - they didn't! They
say the Net is killing high street stores - it ain't.......)

Now, I hear you ask 'is it any good?' - No idea yet, ain't even opened the
box. I'll report here later.

LIDL here always do excellent deals on DVD Players, Tellys, VCR's and even
some stonking computers (fully specced - no cheapo oem crap) - although i
usually refer to them as 'super-gippo-mart' :D

Well, you can call me a 'gippo' then! - For a Monday morning, the total
absence of the usual 'tireditis' and 'cluelessness' that I have come to
expect from the local TV/hifi shops has made me an instant Lidl fan! (Also,
I ain't too posh to get a 'bargain', if bargain it truly is!)

:-)

The player? eBench KH 6777 - got me 'backfooted' atm with a totally
unexpected and very pleasant sound, so I'm a little wary!

Very best audio I've heard in a long while from a silver disk spinner and
movies are *at least* as good as I've seen on quite a variety of DVDPs.
Colour and sharpness are superb and would not disappoint at several times
the proce - make that 10 (or more) times the price!

It uses a Sanyo loader and the Zoran chipset is used by a wide variety of
manufacturers like MiCo, Samsung, Toshiba and Arcam - presumably different
versions of the current Vadis chipset. Fascia buttons are of the very
positive, 'clicky' type and pleasant to use. Build quality is entirely par
for the course - at about 3.5 kg it is not quite as 'flyaway' as one might
expect!

The specification is *ludicrous* at this price:

Onboard AC3 decoder for full DD 5.1
Onboard DTS decoder
Plays DVD-Video, DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW**, CD/CDR/CDRW, MP3s, WMAs, JPEG picture
disks
One Scart socket
Coax and Toslink digital outputs
Video and S-Video outputs
Component video output with Progressive Scan
TWO separate headphone jacks with independent volume controls!
Will output to PAL and NTSC

**Doesn't claim to play -R or +R disks but we've found that it will do so
perfectly with the *exception* of JVC -Rs - it just don't like these! (Not
sure what dye - JVC's own??)

Technical data (photo extract from the manual):

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keith_g/show/manual.jpg

Or the whole manual (1.5 Mb PDF) can be found he

http://www.kompernass.com/product_pd...2b7576bd_4.pdf

Even the zapper is much more stylish than one would expect at this price, as
is the generous and well-presented manual which runs to no less than 65
full-size A4 pages! The top half of the player is a 'dead chick' mirror
finish, so here's a couple of no-flash pix for anyone who's interested:

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keith_g/show/ebench.jpg

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keith_g/show/zapper.jpg

If you can get one, you may buy with confidence! (Stand on me.....)

Enjoy!

(Now, who do I see for my commission.......???)

;-)

********, I forgot to say the player also creamed through several 'standard'
tests for Seamless Branching on a small selection of disks without any
problems whatsoever and, due to using a DVD-ROM drive, all layer changes
were truly 'invisible'.....

I'll join the 'gippo' club. I bought 3 of these yesterday. Initially I
bought one as a gift for a friend for Christmas but after a quick test
to check it was all working I bought another two, one to relace my
recently purchased DreamX108 Chinese cheapie and one, well, erm.. for spare!

Incidentally, in my Lidl it all kicked off when a man grabbed the last 5
players and headed to the tills - several words were exchanged and it
looked like it'd come to blows. Seeing as it was Lidl the staff didn't
bat an eyelid :-)

Progressive scan from this player is very solid. Unusually for a
cheapie, it doesn't transcode PAL to NTSC and then output 480p or 525p -
it's outputting true 576p. Picture is lush, smooth and has excellent
colour reproduction. Sound from the onboard decoder is very good.

For 38 quid it's a steal

Handles unbranded +r and -R with ease too

Seconded - a proper bargain.
