Old Arcam CD players
I've got an Arcam Alpha 3 amp and tuner, currently with an old Technics cd
player (can't remember the model, remote control, probably as old as the arcam gear, at least it sounds better than my DVD player). Would an Arcam CD player of a a similar vintage be worth having or would I be better off looking for something like an oldish Marantz in the ad mag (when I listened to Arcam's recent CD player and a Marantz, it was *very* close behind for not much less money)? |

The Alpha 9 is the one to go for. Expect to pay around £300 to £350.

If you go to http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/avondale/ they say the Alpha 5 is a good one the site says "These fine players were built using the same transport and chipset as the Naim CD3 so consequently, respond in a very similar fashion to our attention. The finished sound is not a few inches (centimeters to the metrically disposed), behind the converted Naims. Some listeners quite prefer the Arcam - especially when told the cost. This converted Arcam is a giant killer of the most excellent proportions and hearing it for only a few moments will convince you just how special CD replay can be." regards Dave |
