Hi all and happy new year :-)

New to the group.

I've seen a cracking little system the denon dm31 and have become quite
impressed with its sound a capabilities for its cost and was thinking abou
buying one.
I have quite a small living room and thought the denon would be ideal. I did
read the speakers where made by mission which is a bonus. Also can be bought
without speakers but I thought the speakers were good for my needs although
the chap in richer sounds did reccomend the Eltax Monitor 3 as he said they
gave a smother sound.

I just have a question although the denon is a lovely system and is very
reasonably priced. But I have this nagging thought in my head to buy a
seperate system, so I am looking for a nudge in the right direction and a
bit of advice from you guys\gals in the know :-)

however my personal opinion is that for most beginners to the hobby,
the Denon D-M31 is an absolutely superb introduction which one would
need to spend at least double the cost of (and perhaps significantly
more) in order to obtain any significant improvement.

The SC-M51 Mission built loudspeakers supplied with the D-M31
optionally as standard are one area where one can improve the
performance of the system at relatively little cost. Your dealer
should of course be able to offer recommendations, although I believe
based on my experience of my original early 1990s Denon D70 system (to
which the D-M31 bears quite some resemblance) that these Denon systems
have considerable synergy with Mission loudspeakers in particular, so
I would be tempted to audition some slightly better quality bookshelf
loudspeakers as potential partners from the current Mission range.
It also worth investing in a good pair of stands if you do so.

Just bought one as a gift for somebody at christmas, would be an
understatement to say it went down a storm! :-)

Agreed - the supplied speakers are utter ****e IMO, even though they
are Mission designs. Since I was boght the Denon at Richer Sounds I
picked up some M71i's in Beech instead - a snip at £59. In this case
the choice was limited by space, but the Denon can drive bigger and
better speakers so shop around.

mission m71's some decent cable and some nice speaker stands and couldn't be
happier it suits all my needs and no complaints from me. Doing the job
remarkably for the price.
