The filres are just 200 of around 1200 I have downloaded, they are copied to
a cd in cd-rom format.

In the shop it played fine on a personal MP3 player but not in the CD Radio
portable, so they re-funded me.

Am I likely to experience the same problem if I purchase another of the same
model? Never heard of VBR.

How would I encove in CBR? Do I need some more software?

Have you checked if the device can go vbr (variable bit rate)? If not you
will need to encode in cbr, or it may not play.

What standard is the disc written to? The player proberbly can't

understand
multi-sessien discs, although a pc can. See here http://csunix1.lvc.edu/
