Getting back into HiFi....
 

The last time I bought any hi-fi was about 15 years ago, a Pink Triangle
deck with an RB300 arm and a Rega cartridge.

I had a Cyrus 1 amp and Celestion DL8 speakers, which are still going
strong.

A few years back, I gave in to the dreaded silver disks and got a really
cheap player.

I'm now looking at a new amp. cd player and speakers.

I see the old companies seem to have matured into professional outfits
(Creek, Rega, Musical Fidelity) and Pink has gone...

Everyone seems to be doing complete systems these days.

Anyway, I 'could' afford a Naim Nait 5 and CD5, or a Musical Fidelity
a3.2 amp and cd, but SevenOaks have the MF kit and Audio T do the Naim
stuff. So how can I get to compare the two systems.... All the Hi-Fi
shops in Reading are chain stores these days...

What I'd really like to do is compare both of those systems with a
Cambridge Audio Azur 640C amp and cd from Richer Sounds, just to see if
the more expensive set ups really are 4 times better... there are always
other things to spend £1500 on.

Any suggestions? Any other kit I should consider?




PS How come valves are back again and what happened to the IncaTech
Claymore amp????

Just got back into it myself Richard, although to my eternal shame, I've
gone down the AV route.

My speakers are ancient, (don't laugh) Wharfdale E90's, bought in my young
and foolish days and even though my missus has begged me to get rid of what
she describes as the coffins, I can't bear to part with them :-(

Ah well, they say HiFi is one of the most subjective hobbies there is.

As for advice, as you can see, I'm far from qualified to give it ;-)

Go to both dealers with a collection of cds and have a good listen.
With them speakers my money would be on the Naim set up I have a CD5 in my
collection of stuff and sounds very good.

I know the CD player can easily be up graded with a flatcap2 also the new
Nait 5i has both din and phono connections and increased power its now 50
watts up from 40 I think

and I'm the same about my LS3/5A's. New isn't always best. I dug out my
Musical Fidelity MC2 speakers a while back (the original versions) and boy
did they sound good.
