Sheesh! It must be about ten years since I bought any - I used to buy that and
Sony Metal-XR in 10-packs on sale specials - and recently when I looked, they
seemed absurdly overpriced - in fact, looking now, RRP NZD$9.95 EACH!
http://www.tdk.co.nz/default.asp?ObjectID=53
That's about GBP£3.66! ... if 59p is a bargain, what's the "normal" price?
I see Richer Sounds has TDK SA90 (Pack of 100) for £59.00 - is that it?
http://www.richersounds.com/index.ph...ist.php&c=1606
What do they sell 10-packs (or singles) for, in comparison?
No way I'd buy 100 ... I suppose you could club in with some others.

I guess my first "hi-fi" purchases were a Sony RX80ES cassette deck and a Sony
308ESD CD player, about 15 years ago IIRC. They both are still in use, the
tapedeck less so, and consequently it's still in quite good nick.
Only a 2-head, but not too shabby-sounding, and I had it checked in that time.

: Will tape ever die?
:
: Lets hope not!

Not while people still have tape collections and car players are not all CD's.
A friend has recently loaned me his Sony WM-D6C to have a play with ...
It seems to do better than the RX80ES, and it's a fricking (pro)Walkman!

I'm seriously interested ... if anybody can advise on a good 10-pack price?

Richer Sounds have always sold cheap tapes and 59p seems pretty much their
regular price for TDK SA90's, however, they don't always have then in stock.
My branch gets its deliveries on Tuesdays and they got a delivery of 400
tapes last week. I bought 20 tapes for just £11.80. The tape has had
brilliant write ups over the years and for 59p is impossible to fault.

No, you can buy them in any quantity you choose. I'm not too sure what the
shipping cost to NZ would be, I've just weighed ten tapes and with packing
it would be about 750-800g.
Perhaps someone here might know?

I'm not too sure what you would pay for a SA90 in NZ but it may well be
worth sending some over to you.

CD's.

Yep, tapes are so much more fun than coasters ;-)

I agree;- I got onto it in the early 90's through a What-HiFi ... ah, July 91
tape comparison (72 tapes!) and bought a few 10-packs at odd times.

Thanks very much for the thoughtful weighing effort!
I should be able to find postage via the appropriate UK Post website ...
http://www.royalmail.com says a small packet 800g anywhere surface = £3.40,
going up (and down) 20p per 50g increment; airmail would be £8.21, going up
and down 20p in 20g increments ...

As above, recommended retail price $9.95/£3.66 ea ... maybe a $1 or so less.
Would Richer Sounds send direct overseas, do you think? - or would it be
better to try and arrange a local purchase and postage and tip for trouble;-?

Said friend who although now more into CD's may also like to buy some ...

: Yep, tapes are so much more fun than coasters ;-)

Yeah; unfortunately I had been attempting to get an old Wearnes 622 - 6x2x2x -
CDR to perform usefully, postponing buying a new recorder ...on a budget.
I seem to have made more coasters than CDRs so far, but've just about got it.
Only likes bog-standard 650MB CDR's, which are becoming hard to find, too.

(I like to microwave any duds on high for a few seconds to "mark" them;-)

Thanks again. I'm not in a huge hurry but at that price it's a worthwhile buy!

I guess the market still exists for people who only have tape in their car, or
a walkman rather than a discman. Saw my first iPod only days ago, via a
visiting friend from overseas. Very impressive. He bought a car kit for it.
(and a cheap car, for a 3mth stay - again, just a radio-cassette onboard)

I have an early metal Sony Walkman WM-20 with Dolby B & chrome settings that I
used to use on bus trips - great sound from 1 AA cell, or a DIY D belt-pack.

Yup;- may tape live on for a while yet!

OK Ross, email me direct and I'll see what I can do for you. I'll pick
another ten up anyway, at that price it doesn't really matter. Even with the
surface mail postage, it's still a fraction of the price you'd pay in NZ.

BTW, IIRC, Richer Sounds don't deliver abroad.

My A-3300SX cost me about £80 last spring, it is the best I have ever used, quiet,
reliable, accurate, trouble free, and well kept by previous owner.

Teac made some interesting gear back then.

Yup, as did a number of others. Trouble is the 'really good stuff' was
hideously expensive in the UK and its 'unaffordability' built up a
resentment with some of us skint Brits that still lingers on today.......
