PC sound card vs AV amp
 
If I take the optical out from a PC sound card to an AV amp that does
the DAC work is there any point in having anything other than the most
basic sound card or on-board sound in the PC?

As long as it does the digital optical conversion adequately, it
would seem not. If you're using the system purely for media playback.
