Default Language is a virus.....

Just a test post to inform those here, to whom I owe a reply email, that as
of 'boot-up' this morning I have got a sodding virus (W32.Protoride.Worm).
It's going to take a bit of faffing around to clear - so it won't get done
for a while* (I'm up to my eyeballs atm!).

I believe it was only activated this morning so I shouldn't have passed it
on, but if I have 'spoken' to you lately you had better scan your machines.
If anyone does have it - my apologies. I disabled my Firewall to enable
cookies from Paypal (I think) and forgot to put it back up! Obviously, I
won't be emailing anyone until I get it clear (or June 2004, when it
'dies'!!! :-)

It'll lock you out of your programs as well as other things, but I don't
think it's too destructive otherwise:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ride.worm.html

It seems to allow emails, newsgroups and Internet access, but then it bloody
would, wouldn't it???

*(I ain't dumb - this ain't the 'important' machine! ;-)

Is it really possible to get a virus because of just not having a firewall
up? Shouldn't a user with special access have to run code before a machine
is infected? Appart from major security holes you shouldn't catch a virus
by just reading an email or webpage, even if they contain virus code.

I used windows for a long time and stoped worying about security holes
when I switched browsers. Opera seemed very good at the time, but I think
firefox is the current favorite. Might be worth a try to avoid this kind
of thing.
