Just thought I'd share my internet shop from the States - an AT OC9 Mk2,
$310 inc, arrived in 5 days from http://www.lpgear.com/. Not all good - got
caught at customs who slapped VAT on, and the PO added another £15, so it
came to about £240 all in.

Still, not bad.

Out of interest, what deck/arm is it destined for?

Yes, I bought a shure M97, not the best possible price in the US, got gouged
by customs like you and still managed to save about 45% off the best UK
price. Can be worth a try, depends on how helpful the US supplier is as
well. Mine was http://www.canterburyrecords.com/ws/shure/shure.html
but a copuple of the other US sellers were not able to help

I've used an OC9 variously on an Ariston RD90 and an Alphason arm, and more
recently a Pink Triangle LPT with an old Linn Akito. Now it's on my latest -
a Project RPM9X with the standard arm. Very impressed :-)

What you can do is ask them to write on the pack that customs see 'Value:
£18'. It's highly unlikely customs would open the package. Insurance would
be a problem though. One supplier actually did this for me without asking
for an OC9 I bought 10 years ago. This time they did the 'decent thing' -
frankly I didn't have the nerve to ask them to mark the price down!

beware when buying FM receivers though - there is some incompatibility in
the frequences (I'm not sure of the details) and RDS won't work.

I've seen several posts from people buying car stereo from the US (many
manufacturers use the same model number) who have been disappointed

excess of the declared value you'll be getting a metaphorical 3am knock on
the door. They don't take kindly to this ruse :-(

Ask them to send the invoice in a separate envelope, then mark the parcel as
"promotional material - no commercial value".

And when they do, how many customs officials know that two 100uf 500v
Black Gate Capacitor have a value of £100 instead of £18 ?

Doesn't fit everything I know...

Coincidentally, I wanted a DVD - King of the Hill (anyone?!) - and could
only find it at a canadian site for £18.30. I asked them to mark the parcel
under £18 and they replied:

To make the label for the items we have everything pretty much computerized.

For the weights we have to put it on machine and it stores the # in the
computer.

There is no way that we can change the weights.
