sniped (without gain)
Has anyone actually tried snake oil? Could it be a victim of bad press?
I'm selling an IPO for a company planning to market a perpetual motion
machine. Don't listen to the sceptics and naysayers, this thing works!
You gotta believe!!! Give me your credit card number and bank account
information and you'll mark this as a day to remember. Also, I have a
friend in Nigeria who wants to contact you, should he use the email
address you post through here on Usenet?
I have genuine high end customer who just bought a pair of the AQ DC
assisted (?) cables ( NOT from me) . He reports that the improvement is
obvious and dramatic. He said that both he and his girl friend heard a
distinct increase in volume. Can this be, at last, the fabled "straight
wire with gain" ?
And if it were, what of it? Why spend big bucks for a volune increase?
That's what the volume control is for, numbnuts. ;-)

Don't feel so much pity for me in my "hope to survive" home business.
You are not aware of my situation, which does not rely on the few dollars I
derive from taking a few special orderas and fixing a few speakers. I do it
because I still like the audio business and the customers who come along.
As for those "credulous fatcats" I am supposed to be fleecing I must
inform you that they are not a common creature in Saint Louis Missouri.
It is unfortunate, though, that you cannot give someone you do not even
know credit for being honest.

That's one of Thing's less obnoxious behaviors.

I will give you credit to this extent: selling snake oil because you
are a credulous ignoramus is less offensive than selling snake oil as
a cynical excercise in fleecing fatcats.
Feel better now?

Why worry about someone who could be anything from a window
salesman/reservist to an eBay scammer to a 17 year old malcontent?
People like that are nothing but hot air and can't be relied upon to
give credible critcism about ANYTHING.
BTW, even the name is stolen from another poster anyway.

Dave,
Thank you for the post. Its nice to see posts from considerate people.
As for tor b, I didn't expect him to change his mind, as he has definite
opinions, and he is entitled to them. He is not alone in the general view
he presents- that the audio business is full of frauds, charlatans, crooks,
deciever ( and other bad names) who are cheating the credulous audiophile
public of their money with audio snake oil. There are countless posters who
present this view, and none who present a contrary opinion.
Actually, as this is a public forum, I wanted to reiterate my basic
point to the other readers. The point being that I, along with many other
people selling audio, are sincerely convinced of the merits of all their
goods. I did this because there are so many posts attacking us as dishonest
that it needed repition. Naturally I understand that if we are granted the
stautus of being honest we are then labeled fools.
While I do not wish to being labeled dishonest or foolish, granted the
choice (being honest) I would have to admit to having been foolish on
several occasions. And if believing in the efficacy of some of the items
termed "snake oil" is foolish then I will probably persist in my
foolishness.

Well, let me support the contrary opinion.
The audio business definitely has credible retailers who have an honest
interest in doing legitimate business with their clients.
In SE Michigan, Pecars, The Gramophone, and Audio Dimensions have served me
reasonably well. Pecars sold me several pairs of speakers by Paradigm and
Boston Acoustics. Gramophone sold me my KEFs. Audio Dimensions sold me most
of my NHTs. I haven't taken *everything* their respective staffs said at
face value, but that's no different from my relationship with virtually
another other kind of retailer.

It's not true that "none" present a contrary opinion. Pretty much everybody
who owns high-end gear has a contrary opinion.
The revolting part of what you call Thing's "opinion" is that it's wholly
irrational. It's not based on the merit of specific pieces of hardware or
accessories; it's entirely driven by class envy. This is not a well person.
The view of which you speak, as held by a great many audiophiles (including
both me and dave weil, who incidentally has worked as a salesperson in the
industry), is based on perceived value. None of us believes that every
adequate amplifier that costs $1,000 can perform equally to a $10,000 one.
Regular people, no doubt like yourself, use their powers of simple reason
to determine what's valuable to them. This is quite different from the
bilious nonsense spouted by Thing and its ilk.
Actually, as this is a public forum, I wanted to reiterate my basic

Only by the Krooborg and its fellow travelers.

Don't worry about the judgment of nerdish missionaries. You can't win with
them until you abjure all material pleasures and live the way they do -- at
an impoverished level based on earning $8 per hour.
