"Stewart Pinkerton" emitted : As promised here is a picture of my subwoofer. I have pushed a settee out of the way so it can be seen, and also removed a white cloth screen that normally covers it. So in use it is totally invisible. http://www.donepearce.plus.com/odds/sub.jpg The driver is a 15 inch Adire Tempest mounted in an 80 cubic foot concrete cupboard, which extends under a staircase on the other side of the wall. The mounting board, which replaces the cupboard door, is 18mm MDF, braced extensively with scaffolding board, screwed and glued edgewise onto it. It is very solid. Call that a subwoofer? Try this: http://www.klone-audio.com/ And check out '12 Shivas dancing'.................. That's nothing. Check out 'Advanced Acoustic Armaments', Jimmy Cauty's pet project - two sonic weapon equipped saracen tanks (installed with "low-frequency weapons bought from the Ministry of Defense"). http://www.trancentral.ru/pix00/07_cauty/saracen01.gif Pretty strange pix, given that the Saracen was a 6 x 6. |

writes "Don Pearce" wrote They look to me like US conduit clamps, which are made out of pretty heavy gauge steel. The cute part is that they are springs so they are unlikely to loosen up. But they are relatively heavy springs. I think the question is why fix them in that way at all? The speakers have 8 perfectly good bolt holes, that all work very nicely as far as I am concerned. Read the text. He wanted quick access to the interior of the box. Why overengineer the fixings, when there's no need to maintain a tight seal? OK - I didn't read. But even if I had, I think I would have missed that bit. Quick access to the inside of a speaker box is a concept that would whizz right by me. Me too, other than this nightmare exhausts up through the floor, so perhaps one of the bottom drivers might be handy to be 'quick-release' but surely not *all* of them? (I would have thought a bit of gerbil-mesh over the top would have prevented a lot of the potential problems??) I suppose we need to remember we're talking Merkinland here - where 'My Audio Gear Is My Knob' rules (and whence 100% of the world's supply of Viagra and penis-enlargement spam emanates)... Anyway, never mind all that, anybody know anything about 'Richard Allan badged' full-range drivers thus: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keit.../raspeaker.jpg Any good (as full-range drivers go)? Built by whom?? That's a genuine Richard Allan CG8T. Richard Allan still make speakers and drive units for the pro-monitor market, and have probably the best drive unit rebuilding/re-coning workshops in the country. I've got the TS parameters for that unit at work. I'll email you from there with them tomorrow. (If you've got two of them they'll certainly be sellable. To me if no-one else!) -- Chris Morriss |

OK, thanks to both of you for the info. I've since found the slightly wacky Richard Allan website http://www.loudspeakersonline.com/. or http://www.richardallanaudio.com/ (both seem to get you there) which establishes them as a bona fide manufacturer rather than the 'someone who supplies Richer Sounds with badged audio gear' that I was (incorrectly) informed. (Interesting section on DC - 10 kHz vibration generators, btw...) I've got the TS parameters for that unit at work. I'll email you from there with them tomorrow. Bit over my head atm, but would be interesting in case I do get into a bit of speaker-fettling..... (If you've got two of them they'll certainly be sellable. To me if no-one else!) They're not mine to sell (yet) - they belong to my 'opposite number in St Neots' (whom I've only just met) and they are fitted into a pair of reet wuffy, fibre-filled, upward-firing horns that I've been playing with (coming up ****e/interesting/****e atm...) He has got a pair of Rogers of mine he's playing with and, as he is particularly susceptible to Rogers speakers, I suspect there'll be an attack of humming and hawing and shuffling of feet coming from his direction in the near future! :-) .......I'm just wondering if they would be a worthwhile driver to play with (in view of Lowther and even Fostex prices) if I tried my hand at a pair of folded horns....??? (Some seriously fascinating stuff on http://melhuish.org/audio/horn.html if you follow the links to places like http://melhuish.org/audio/DIY.html and some German geezer's excellent site that I've lost atm and can't get back to yet!) |

It's a heavily modified Saracen tank (shape is right) or armoured car. Shape is completely *wrong* for a Saracen - as is the drive configuration. Furthermore, we don't have a 'Ministry of Defense', and Cauty admitted that he just loaded the cars up with old disco gear biased toeards very low frequencies - although those pictures show no evidence of anything capable of generating significant LF power. The vehicles were purchased from a scrapyard. Took about ten seconds on Google to find out all this. It's a heavily modified Saracen tank (shape is right) or armoured car. Shape is completely *wrong* for a Saracen - as is the drive configuration. That's obvious from the pictures, which is why I collected them to help Dormer straighten himself out. Furthermore, we don't have a 'Ministry of Defense', That's a critical hole in Dormer's story. Cauty admitted that he just loaded the cars up with old disco gear biased toeards very low frequencies - although those pictures show no evidence of anything capable of generating significant LF power. That's what the pictures show. I didn't bring this point up because its a judgement call, albeit an obvious one. There is some documentation about the sort of things people are using to implement low frequency weapons, and none of them are the relatively small PA speakers that are shown in Dormer's picture. The vehicles were purchased from a scrapyard. Took about ten seconds on Google to find out all this. Not the first time Dormer has fallen for a scam. Compare to these pictures: long list of Saracen tank jpg links clipped It has been described as both. But not as a 4x4. Like I said, it's a heavily modified Saracen tank or armoured car. The Saracen is usually described as an APC, with armored car being a reasonable alternative description. Tank? http://www.bartleby.com/61/68/T0036800.html "3. An enclosed, heavily armored combat vehicle that is armed with cannon and machine guns and moves on continuous tracks." http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionar...tank&x=19&y=12 "3 : an enclosed heavily armed and armored combat vehicle that moves on tracks" Obviously, none of the pictures show tracks. Why are you distressed? Why should I be distressed by addtional evidence that you are a liar, Dormer? More to the point, it doesn't even *vaguely* resemble a Saracen! Shows how blind Dormer is when he's got his head screwed up in a knot. Might possibly be based on a Bushmaster. Of course, since Cauty was/is a notorious scammer, it could also be a wooden mockup on a Land Rover chassis... Cauty is a scammer, Dormer is a scammer. Seems to fit! |
