A bit of punctuation and "the" correct spelling of viruses would go a long

Or even "A" correct spelling of viruses - that would have done as well.

So, no, it wasn't.

No need for any of that - mine was just fine. As for "A" correct
spelling of viruses - no. There is only one correct spelling, so you
can't have "A" correct spelling.

(pedantry ON)

No, 'a' is grammatically and stylistically better. The word 'spelling' used
in this instance is a gerund. It signifies the act of spelling on this
occasion, not _the_ spelling of 'viruses'. As such, it is _a_ spelling of
'viruses' (i.e. the incorrect one used on this occasion)

(pedantry OFF)

( I say chaps, this beats discussing anything significant or on topic,
dunnit? ;-) )

Sorry, but it won't wash. There is only one spelling of viruses; hence
you can't have "a" spelling of viruses. Spell it any other way and you
haven't spelled viruses.

And I wasn't using the gerund form of spelling, but the verb form,
hence the lack of any article.

Actually my point was more along the lines of, the OP was trying to help,
you were more interested in putting him down and making yourself look good.

Wanna talk about why you feel the need to do that?

Well, a few reasons.

One was that the OP WAS stupid if he really thought that the person
posting the viruses was about to read the replies.

Two, that in protesting an accusation of stupidity he revealed himself
incapable of coherent communication. That was ironic/funny - as you
like.

Three, this is an otherwise fairly mundane and tedious newsgroup. So
this looked like an opportunity for some light relief.

Incidentally, who do you think might have been helped by his post?

Next?

need quotes around the word.

Also, there may be another Latin-style plural "viri".

You appear to be suffering a case of computer-ese. You don't enclose
words in inverted commas for such a purpose.

And of course, the plural of virus is viruses. They didn't have them
in ancient Roman times (all very healthy), so we can quite happily use
modern usage in pluralisation.

Ok, so the correct plural of virus is viruses.
So what, I got it wrong.

The point of my post was to warn off gullible folk who might be tempted to
download the nasty bit of code that the web link gave.
Furthermore of course, I don't expect that the spammer will ever read any
replies to his / her or "it's" post.

If you want a lengthy discussion on English spelling & grammar then surely
there is a more appropriate newsgroup.
Lets get back to fish and forget the grammer, spelling and viruses please!

So a discussion of English grammer (sic) isn't appropriate but a
discussion of viruses is?

And I think it is a long, long time since anybody on any of these
groups was gullible enough to download any of this stuff..

And of course a discussion of English is actually far more
interesting.

Sadly gents, a little look at a Latin dictionary might have put you all
right.

Vir, plural viri (m) Man, grown man, brave man, hero, husband, foot soldier.
Virus, plural viri, (n) Slime, poison, offensive smell, salt taste.

Absolutely correct, current use of the word virus (and its plural 'viruses')
is merely one example of the modern usage of a Latin word as, of course, is
the word 'omnibus'....

All the Latin scholars here might like to try a bit of a translation of the
words of this clip....

(Failing that, just to 'name that tune' would impress me no end..... ;-)
