Behringer SRC2496 as a hi-fi DAC
I have been on the lookout for a 44.1/48/96kHz DAC for hi-fi use. The
only device I found initially was produced by Meridian, and had a four figure price tag. On following some links posted here to broadcast equipment I tumbled on a Behringer sample rate converter that also has ADCs and DACs and costs less than two hundred pounds. http://www.behringer.com/02_products...C2496&lang=eng Its paper specification looks impressive and it appears to do everything I could possibly want and much more. Before parting with my hard earned money I would appreciate comments about the suitability of this equipment for domestic hifi use. Specifically, what would paying an extra 1,300 pounds for the Meridian DAC give me? Thanks. -- Chris Isbell Southampton UK |

I not used any of their gear before but I've heard good things said about it. It seems that its very good value for the money, but these have been from broadcast users where they don't have the un-controlled lunacy that invades hi-fi.. -- Tony Sayer |

Digital Village have it at 170 pounds on their Web site (http://www.digitalvillage.co.uk/). I have just called their Southampton branch who advised me that they are still awaiting their first shipments from Behringer. (I have no commercial connection with Digital Village, but they had one of the lowest prices found and a branch close to me.) It seems that its very good value for the money, but these have been from broadcast users where they don't have the un-controlled lunacy that invades hi-fi.. I would tend to agree. However, Meridian do, I believe, have a good reputation for well designed quality equipment. (As used by our very own Jim Lesurf. ;-) Hence I am interested to learn more about the differences between their DAC and the Behringer device. -- Chris Isbell Southampton UK |

Their compressors (Composer) have made quite an inroad at the 'bottom' end of the broadcasting market in studios and dubbing suites, but IMHO, they're not quite at the Neve level. ;-) -- *Ever stop to think and forget to start again?
