Hi - I recall a post about these a while ago, but can't seem to find them
now. A friend has asked me about getting one (turntable-amp-spkrs in one
box) as a short-medium term solution while she's moving home and has all her
stuff (except records) in storage.

Anyone any opinions/views?

TIA

Rob

You need a Dansette! Must be one on Ebay somewhere.

You don't want the speakers in the same box as the turntable - there's a
risk of acoustic feedback from the speakers and it will almost certainly
degrade the sound. A turntable/amp combination with separate speakers
would be fine though.

In fact - I have a Dynatron unit with a Garrard SP25 built in that I'm
thinking of selling.

Cheers.

James.

Would you play your records on one of those? ;-)

I did (for most of my 45s anyway). But that was real - not
post-ironic.

Ah. We had a pre-war Marconi radiogram post fitted with a Collaro
autochanger in my 45 days. So the 'valve' sound isn't new. Wonder if mains
energized loudspeakers will come back as well?

The switchable tone controls were labelled 'bass' and 'brilliance'...

I remember that for my mother tone controls had to be left on full
treble cut. She then described the sound as "mellow". Actually, it was
a bit of compensation on radio. Her method of tuning was to leave the
volume control turned way up, then tune just far enough into a station
to get the volume she wanted. This was medium wave of course. Later
she used the same method on FM - you can imagine the result, but she
still liked it.

Many thanks all - some marvellous curiosities on ebay! I've passed on the
recommendations and I'll let you know ...

Sounds like mine. On holiday at us one day she decided to do some
Hoovering while listening to R4 on FM. She turned it up to hear it over
the racket, and cooked all the tweeters in my BC1s. Used to having
compression on R4 medium wave (Scotland) she said -'but it wasn't that
loud'...

Oh no, please. The tweakers will be forever comparing energising supply
level to sound quality ;-)

Ah, back to them good old days where wooden cased valve radios had a 'luv'ly
tone' and had a sunrise backlit by panel lights.
