Go to www.richersounds.co.uk. On the first page of bargains you can make
a pretty good system for £260 - there's a Sony AV receiver, a Marantz CD
player and a pair of Mission speakers. Hard to go wrong there really.
Years ago (1981 I think) Richer Sounds had just one store somewhere near
Waterloo Station if memory serves me correctly. I bought a Toshiba power amp
(to use with a Quad 33 pre amp), a pair of LS3/5a lookalike speakers and an
Aiwa tuner at what was then a good price. A little later I added one of the
first Marantz CD players, the top loading gold coloured one, and that system
served me well for quite a long time. I have just looked at the web site and
am amazed at how the company has grown!
Yes, I've been lucky enough to have lived in Hertfordshire until,
recently, and on the doorstep of the Watford branch. I have never been
anything less than impressed with their service.
What, you never went round the corner and drooled on the windowsills
at Acoustic Arts? :-)

Is their Watford store on a corner of the road from Rickmansworth going
North? If so I used to buy stuff there a long time back too. I bought a
Mission Cyrus amp there and whilst in the shop heard the first Sade CD,
Diamond Life, and bought that too. I only sold that Cyrus amp about six
years ago.
That's the one, still there too.

That name rings a bell, maybe that was the shop I am thinking of. The last
time I was in Watford would have been 1985 I think, would Richer Sounds have
been there then?
I grew up in Ruislip and later moved to Hatfield which I left when I went to
live overseas in 1983

When I worked there (for all of 4 weeks) I seem to remember it being
referred to as "Acoustic Farts".
It's all a matter of perspective, I guess.
If the components cannot function independently of the others they are
supplied with, then they aren't "separates".

If you want some well made hi-fi for a good price, have a good look at
the Cambridge stuff, a nicer sounding amplifier you will not hear for
the money. For speakers, look for the JPW's, I have a pair of Sonatas,
and it'd take a lot more expense to get a better sound.
As an entry level amplifier, I'd go for the latest rendition of the PMA-250
over an A1 Mk3. My PMA-250SE drives a pair of Sony SS86 in the computer
room. The rest of the stack in here is a TU-260 Mk 2, a DCD-655 (which is
seldom used), a VideoLogic DRX-601E DAB tuner, and a PC with an Echo Gina
sound card.
It's also advisable to keep an eye out on eBay -- you can occasionally get a
quality set of components for a hundred pounds or so.

well but they need a good overhaul. For everyday use I use Kef Cresta 3's
but I have a set of ESL 57's for special occasions )

I know the Watford Richer Sounds well. The staff are excellent. I went with
my father to help him pick out a decent set of speakers (he wanted a second
opinion). Got an amazing sounding pair (which may appear on ebay soon as
he's now got a set of 11Ls) for £80. They really were good for the money.
Not a scratch on the Quad 11Ls but it was years ago.
May be popping back soon as he now needs a new AV receiver. It's great coz
he hates all the looking about. It's my favourite part but my hifi is as
good as I need/can afford, at the moment. You learn so much reading up on
the units and researching what the different values mean. Great stuff
