Default IPL Subs anybody??

I'm (quite possibly) in the market for a 'decent' sub** and I'm all at
sea....

I've auditioned a Mission which wasn't too peachy and have been offered a go
at some nicely veneered but ludicrously-priced REL 'minicubes' (Quake?) -
with tiny drivers that ain't even gonna beat my main speakers ('10 inch'
bass drivers). So, I'm wondering about throwing one together myself - anyone
got a good word for the IPL SW2 and SW3 Sub kits?

The price looks about what I had in mind and they do look appealing. (2
coats of black emulsion paint finish, if I can't veneer 'em nicely...... :-)

Or.....

What about one of these.....

http://www.iplacoustics.co.uk/ipl_sw..._subwoofer.htm

..... and rip the innards out if it's crap (likely) and replace them with
'better' components - too wacky??

Or.......

While I'm on, I don't suppose anyone has any experience of these:

....under the heading of 'cheap and cheerful but *not* ****e'???

(I'm aware of what's available on eBay atm and I'm keeping an eye on
things.... ;-)

** forget previous silly remarks about it being for Home Cinema use only - a
****e sub is a ****e sub......

I'd be interested to hear people's views on this. I've looked into getting
one of these:
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...er-6-2002.html
imported (the UK distributor can't, and if he could, £700) - they seem well
reviewed - but Adire don't seem too keen on replying to emails.

To lose directionality, it needs to work below 60hz - I think - so that's
one of the things I'm thinking about.

Rest assured Keith, if it happens you can have a blast :-).

Very interesting (if somewhat kludgy) site......

Things have moved on a bit since I posted the above - I got beat on an eBay
auction for an interesting sub earlier this evening, which leaves building
summat as the No. 1 option. Ho hum! ;-)

(Moira would actually *prefer* me to build something apparently - seems
she's got confidence in my building activities!!! :-)

The reason I'm attracted to the IPL kits is that it looks like you can get
the whole beeswax from what appears to be a UK one-man band and the prices
look quite reasonable (for 200W and decent sized Audax cones). I'm guessing
it would be a fairly good (simple?) 'first time project', especially as I
have been trying to avoid getting into anything to do with speakers - too
much new ground to cover!!

Anyhoo, I'll give the geezer a call tomorrow and 'feel' him out...... ;-)

I suspect that this unit will beat the krap out of anything below say
the B&W ASW650 - after all, it's based on the superb Adire Shiva, and
12" drivers don't get any better than that!

I don't know about the subs but I've heard quite a few of the IPL designs
and they are excellent. It would do no harm to have a word with Ivan - he's
very approachable and knows what he's talking about.

Thanks Stephen, that's very encouraging and rather what I wanted to hear -
I'll be giving him a call in a little while.
