Turntable channel buzzing
I have a Project 1 turntable fitted with an Ortofon 510 cartridge.
It's been working fine for years of light use. I recently moved house and on setting it up again, I found there was a loud buzz on the left channel. Switching the plugs around at the amp switched the buzz to the right channel so I know the amp is ok. I thought that maybe there was a problem with the connections to the cartridge so I disconnected the wires to the cartridge and reconnected them making sure there was nothing shorting or whatever but still had the same problem. However I found when I was disconnecting the cartridge using a tiny pair of needle nose pliers as I can't get my fingers in there, I touched both the blue and green leads with the pliers and the buzzing stopped. A bit of experimentation showed that while these connections were crossed I had sound on both channels and no buzz. I have no idea what this means. Can anyone tell me if this might be indicative of a knackered cartridge or cable? Cheers Paul |
