Probably quite a few.

I left the BBC in '78 and went to Thames. And since going freelance in '92
(against my will, but Thames lost their franchise) I've only worked for
the BBC once, and didn't enjoy it.

I'm not sure what percentage of mics they now own, or just hire in as
needed. When I worked there, it was possible to have several LE shows with
orchestras being recorded on the same day, and there usually enough mics
to cope.

Mike Felton is the SS on 'Later with Jools' and an excellent sound mixer.
He's just gone freelance and I'm sure will be open to offers. ;-)

Yes I'd heard that about the BBC, I was with a local independant commercial
station Moray Firth Radio - the only brushes we've had with the BBC is that
they have so many folk to do one job. We had to be
producers/presenters/production/recordists and editers all rolled into one -
and we used to listen (mostly) to all promos which took forever - reckon my
regular two hour live prog would take about six hours prep without promo
listening, arranging interviews with artists telco or in-studio, arranging
bands who mostly would be late! you know the score...good fun all the same
but not much free time left and exhausting. I got good Rajar so it was worth
it for that satisfaction but I felt really free when I stopped ;-).

Thanks but I wouldn't dream of taking a U87 on gigs - especially near
drummers, the '58's are mostly unbreakable but I've had a drummer break the
casing just below the head, Shure repaired it free of charge (thanks guys if
you read this). Now for recording (not live) its a different matter, things
seem to be a bit more civilised somehow :-)

You obviously haven't seen John Ottway on stage :-)

I mixed sound for him at Cardiff University once, and he abused SM58s
like nobody else on earth. He banged his forehead on them, hit the
monitor with them, swung them around his head, put one in his mouth, he
even gargled beer into one, which was pretty disgusting. Half way
through the gig I asked his manager how many mikes he got through. He
gave me this look as though to say "everyone asks me that" and said
"About three a week on tour. We can fix about half of them". The guy was
a total nut case on stage. I wouldn't let him be in the same county with
anything that had 'Neumann' or 'Schoeps' written on it.

Hi,
What a headcase!!
The answer I guess is to hang a cheap SM58 lookalike alongside the good ones
though not connected back to the board but to a press button that gives a
shot of say 80V via current limiting resistor (don't want to kill him - too
much paperwork) if that doesn't work increase the level.... :o)))
No I haven't met anyone that crazy yet ...but there's still time.

I'll tell him what you said next time I see him ;)

OK :-)

By the way, what happened to Willy Barrett (sp?). I seem to remember
they did some stuff together. I saw John Ottway twice live, second time
was at a wedding, off all things! that time he was a bit more
restrained, but that might have been because it was a wedding crowd, not
a bunch of mad students!

I guess it would have been around 1987 when I saw him eating a 58. Give
him my regards (he won't have a clue who I am, but he might remember
playing Cardiff Union). I still have a copy of 'headbutts' somewhere
around on 45. If nothing else, he was (is?) a unique performer.

Willy has made a name for himself as a maker of wooden furniture; the design
of which can best be described as 'challenging' ;-) He plays occasional
solo gigs and *very* occasionally reunites with Otway.

Otway, of course, still plays well in excess of 100 gigs a year - he played
his 2000th gig back in 1993 and is heading for 3000. He is currently
planning a world tour by chartered airliner - taking a plane full of
supporters along to ensure a decent attendance at all the gigs
