Default Dynavox VR70-E again!

Just picked up Hi-Fi world, the word is out on these dynavox amps,
although its quoted at £400 from Aff. Valve aka Lim! Ive also noticed
that he's doing a modified version (Svets & 4 silver mica caps) for
alot more money. Oh well, it was nice whilst it lasted!

Interesting

Firstly, I notice there aren't so many on eBay now - just one at silly money
atm (£105 and 3 days to go - see Auction No. 3856161918) and secondly the
Dynavox was advertised at £250 by the Affordable Valve Co in HFW only a
month or two ago!!

I have just changed the valves in one of mine (JJ Tesla EL34s and NOS
Mullard ECF82 driver/splitters) and have to say it's a significant
improvement over the Chinese valves. The sound is much 'rounder' and
'fuller' now with a very strong bass - the Chinese valves are good but have
a slightly 'glassy' overlay to the sound with a somewhat less well-defined
bass.

What *does* make these amps sit up is feeding them from an active Line
Stage - I've got an EAR834L going into the Dynavox and it's like the bloody
thing is on steroids now!!

(Bags of spank!! :-)

OK, but in reality the Dynavox isn't any more Chinese than, say, a NAD - as
it was designed in Germany by a German (Audio Institute AFAIK?) and is built
in China. As such, I wouldn't really call it 'Chinese'....??? I would also
say, much as I like Phil's Ming Da phono, I'm not into 'cosmetics' too
much - I prefer the money to go on the components and these things are well
cheap enough compared to their 'Western' counterparts!

(Or put it another way, most of my gear looks like crap generally - too much
polished s/s and gold anodising would be a tad out of place!! :-)

But I have to say, with the line stage on, the Dynavox really is delivering
the goods - I wanted a rig that would tidy up CDs and make them a bit more
'listenable' and, booger I, it's certainly doing that!!

:-)
