OK, listen carefully......

....I shall say this only once.....

Some time back someone posted to the effect 'is it possible to get into
valves for under £***?' (I don't remember the figure - maybe someone else
does, but it wasn't a very large sum?) and a smallish thread ensued....??

Well, I'm not sure what it means in respect to my other (much-loved) amps,
but I gotta say I have just heard the *best ever* rendition of my main
'reference' album (and the *best ever* rendition of my ultra-reference track
on that album) just now, on a setup using my (revalved) 'Chinese' Dynavox
VR-70E (EL34) amp.....

.....and I feel constrained to mention it here!!

If anyone is toying with the idea of trying valves (which, as I have said on
many previous occasions, are not for everyone) there surely will be no
better opportunity than that presented on eBay right now - these amps are
actually sliding off the table (some with no bids at all) at *only*£213 (+
£20 shipping) would you believe??

When is it *ever* going to be cheaper to grab a valve amp??

As delivered, the amp is perfectly respectable and, I am sure, will please
anyone no end. They represent absolutely *ludicrous* value for money IMO
(especially when you see the prices of some valve amps) and have simply got
to be the best way into valves, bar none. There hasn't beem a pfennig/yuan
wasted on 'glitz' (no 'Tart's Handbag' these!!) and the weight of the
transfomers is very reassuring - borne out by a *very* respectable bass,
with detail, depth, dynamics and 'tone' all very satisfying and almost
unbelievable at the price!!

Go scrute one on my 'Chinese Amplifier' Page (I'm going to have to change
that - these amps are no more Chinese than NAD gear!):

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keit...chineseamp.htm

Buy one (no input selector switch mind - you would need an external one to
run more than one source), get shot of the Chinese power valves and
substitute summat like JJ Teslas (not hideously expensive) and these amps
rock! Go to Halfords and buy a can of pearlescent spraypaint and personalise
it! (I reckon you can't go wrong!! :-)

(I have also replaced the drivers on mine, but I haven't checked yet whether
or not it makes much difference???)

Now, enough already - I'm not being paid and I'm not on bloody commission,
but I felt I had to mention these amps for the last time, while they are
still available!

Over and out. Roger wilco....

:-)

Nice to hear you're happy. That's what it's all about in the end. It's a great
feeling, sitting in your home, listening to familiar music come up better than
it did before. One of life's pleasures. Andy

It gets better:

I've got some Debussy Preludes playing (Ciani on 2 volumes of DG vinyl,
naturally....) while I'm catching up on the computer and there are some
pretty bold swells at times. Without me knowing Swim 'picked up the notes' a
little while ago and has been playing some trills on her piano (opposite end
of the house/bungalow) at the same time - I never even noticed, they blended
in perfectly!! When she drew my attention to it a few minutes ago, I
couldn't tell the piano (real one - made of wood....) from the record!!

:-)

Hopefully you can tell Swim from an alien using her body..........

Says much for your sound stage. Seek help.

OK, further comparisons prompt me to say that my KT88 amp is holding its own
with a somewhat more refined presentation of the same music mentioned above,
albeit with a little less 'punch'. It is offering a little more air/space
and a slightly 'less-forward' delivery with a tighter, reduced bass.

Confirms my original suspicions that the EL34 amp is, in fact, well suited
to CD and other digital sources, especially with material like the Yello
'techno', recently mentioned elsewhere.....
