Interesting. My experience with Lenco turntables was that they looked

Yup - and were best matched to a medium compliance cart. Like the Goldring
G800H etc.

IIRC the G800 was favoured by DJs and even the Beeb because it was the only
cartridge that would survive continual disc cueing.

Classically, the Stanton range was favoured by DJs for its resistance
to back-cueing.

Yup. However, the BBC designed RP2 which had two modified 301 which
allowed cuing and 'instant' start, was originally fitted with mono only
Tannoy turnover cartridges then G800 for stereo compatibility. Probably
because the G800 survived well enough considering its price. And it was
only TV, after all. ;-)

Radio DJs wanted the Gates fitted with Stantons they'd been used to on
pirate ships.

I don't know anything about the condition of your 78's, etc. However I'd

I don't know what specific cartridges these days can be purchased with
stylii/cantalever designed for '78' replay. However people like Shure used
to do this. If so, I'd recommend buying a modern MM or MC cartridge with a
suitable '78' stylus, and an RIAA preamp. (Although you may need to modify
the output depending on the brand/date of the discs - particularly if you
already do this to take into account non-RIAA recordings.)

Slainte,

Jim

Thank you for the advice received from one and all. I have now got
sorted out with an Ortofon OM5E MM cartridge, a good 78 RPM stylus,
phono pre amp and a good deal of help from Lenco Heaven website.
Many thanks to all for the contributions.

Ian
