Merging stereo sound files into mono?

Hiya. I'm looking for some sort of tool where I can feed in a stereo MP3
file and have it merge the two streams into a mono MP3? (But otherwise
retaining the full quality of sound that goes in.)

I'm hoping that by losing the useless extra stream, the MP3 file could take
up less space on my flash memory card.

(I still have the original CDs if that helps.)

Many thanks.

Bill, president of cable conservation society.

retaining the full quality you could rerip the cd into mono, or rerip into stereo at
half the bitrate. using a flash memory card I suspect you may be using headphones to
listen with and not having stereo takes the sting out of music as all instruments and
vocals will seems as from the exact middle. IME it is a very daft experience. I find
that half the birate (or 3/4 or it) in stereo will be a better compromise.

Good idea. The ripper I'm using doesn't have a mono option, but I'm sure
others do it.

A tool that would work on the MP3 files and save me from having to load the
CDs again would be nice, but what the hey.

Ah, I forgot to mention (sorry). I'm totally deaf in my left ear. Stereo
has only ever been a pain. (Stupid stereo headphones. *mutter*)

So yes, for me, eliminating stereo would be all plus. I can only hear mono
anyway.

If you rip into a WAV file then you can use any encoder that offers a mono option.

Your headphones last twice as long then :) or you should qualify for 50% off.

Yup, I use Goldwave for exactly that purpose. Open a stereo file, tick mono
box, save - job done!
