I'm thinking of buying one of these as I like the feature set ( microphone,
decent battery life, choice of formats, etc ).

But its quite expensive now that the ipod price has dropped, and I get the
impression the HD340 is due for an ease of use and cosmetic redesign.

Anyone have any insights as to whether any new versions are imminent?

The latest iPods have a much improved battery life and will handle MP3 or
AAC files. Third party 'clip on' microphones are easily available

Mm, I saw a review of someone using a microphone add-on withan ipod, which
implied it was bearable for voice but useless for music (I play in an
acoustic band and want to record rehearsals - not hifi but good enough to
play along to).

I read it as being a problem with the ipod input capability, but now I think
about it, it might have been a problem with the particular microphone device
being used?

It's apple and it's crippled recording software - linux on the iPod allows
high quality recording - eventually maybe apple will allow it as standard.
