Steve,

You suggest

B&W VM1 http://www.bwspeakers.com
Mission FS1AV http://www.mission.co.uk

Are those Mission FS1AV's good with music do you know?

Hi

I'm sorry - I don't have any personal experience of them. Probably best to
try and get an audition somewhere.

They do an FS2 which is a 2 channel system designed for music - that might
be worth a look.

Yep,

I'm off work next week so intend on having a little float around and a few
"listens".

As always I'll spend more money that I initially anticipated!

I quite like the look of the Mirage Omnistat speakers. At £200ish each plus
a woofer I'll be on £1300 just for speakers but if they do what Mirage claim
they will do (even sat on top of the telly!) then they'll probably be a good
investment. Even at £1300, if I buy a system like the NAD or Linn I'll only
be around the usual retail price of the Bose system so still within budget
really.

It's a minefield.

Has anyone got any experience of the Mirage Omnistat's?

Any quick opinions on the Bose Lifestyle 35 anyone.

I'm looking at buying a very neat and compact Hi-Fi with home theatre
capability and most important... small speakers (need to keep wife off the
case!). The Bose system seems to fit the bill nicely but having never had

a
Bose before I was wondering are they any good? Reliable? decent sound in

an
ordinary room (as opposed to a test room)?

Any opinions/help appreciated.

**Sony, Pioneer and others make much better products, at far more attractive
prices. When looking at Bose products, you should bear several things in
mind:

*Dr Bose is, by a very wide margin, the wealthiest individual in the audio
business.
*Bose Corp is a very large, privately owned company. They are not required
to list their assets and liabilities to anyone, outside the IRS (the taxman)
*Bose Corp is immensely profitable (mostly for Dr Bose) from the
time-honoured tradition of building the cheapest possible product, then
selling that product at the highest possible price.
*Bose is a MARKETING company, that just happens to sell audio products.
*Bose spends more money on marketing, than on R&D.
*Bose products are never available at GENUINE discount prices. Price fixing
is common with Bose products.

Some 20+ years ago I bought some Mission speakers (50's I think). They were
superb (for the day!). I still have them but they've been promoted to the
garage and they make my £100 "Hi-Fi" (!) sound OKish. I've looked at B&W
website too. The problem with both Mission and B&W is that their speakers
look like speakers and when you live in a smallish house and have a fussy
wife then that's just not on. If I had my own room in the house and the
money I'd have Quad electro-statics as I fell in love with those years ago.
Space and money dictate though! Those B&W Nautilus jobs look and sound great
too but the cost...!

I'd rather have 'speakers that look like speakers' than have half the
room dominated by a CRT based television. Funny how people can't
tolerate proper speakers yet put up with a monstrous last-century
television.

Get an LCD (or even plasma) TV to save space, and keep proper speakers!
