A subwoofer shortlist?

Even better, buy some good 15" long-throw drivers (a pair of Adire
Tempests would be ideal), and mount them in an 'infinite baffle' aka
ceiling or basement, driven by a 'plate' amplifier. You'll get
*massively* more really deep bass than from any commercial sub, for
far less money.
Sorry, I had already examined the option. The ceiling is the only
possible option in this room, but it isn't a good idea domestically.
Anyway, I gave up designing and building audio kit long ago because:
- it's relatively easy to do;
- it's much harder and much more time-consuming to do well; and
- I value my time more than the worth I get from the investment.
However, I see you are right that the bigger systems are going to be
much more expensive to buy than to build and I'm not yet sure that a
reasonable commercial subwoofer will be a useful audible gain. I shall
have to go out and listen.
