Default ProAc 125 in Cherry wood ....... Fading

Hi,

I just purchased a delightful pair of used ProAc 125's in Cherry wood,
everything is in exceptional condition except for when I take the grill's
off there is fading around where the grill's sit. I know the ProAc's are
real wood veneered only so does anybody know of a product that will bring
the fading back to life.

A picture of the problem can be viewed here

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Mark.

I have seen this question asked a few times for various woods and I
regret I have seen no full solution. Cherry wood in particular is well
known for darkening with age and light.

I have seen the following suggestions reported:

- Leave them out in the natural light for the next year: this is said
to reduce the visible contrast greatly but is also said to never
eliminate it. A practical data point is that my yew veneered Proacs
developed a noticeable demarcation after the grills had been on for
a month during their first year. It was much less of a contrast than
yours and after a few weeks with the grills off again the demarcation
did actually disappear completely.

- Stain: this is said to work temporarily but if you leave the grills off
and the basic wood colours converge with age and light the colour
match goes off. I have no practical data point.

- UV lamp: This is said to darken the wood rapidly but does not
apparently quite emulate a naturally-aged colour. Again, I have no
practical data point.

Sorry for not providing a solution, however someone else may be able to.
Nevertheless, do enjoy the sound.

It seems rather obvious - the discrepancy is due to the grilles shading part
of the wood from the light that's causing the darkening, so leave the
grilles off and put a temporary cover around the bits that are already
darkened until the two areas match.
