You got DSG?
OK... I'm jealous. :-)
Approaching roundabout at 120 or so in 'Sport' mode, slam on the
anchors, foomaaa, foomaaa, foomaaa, foomaaa, throw her in, wriggle
from the ESP as she adjusts to the side loads, floor it at the apex,
woaa, woaaa, woaaaa, woaaaaa, woaaaaaaaaaaa.
The Bose system is redundant........................ :-)
Colleague in shiny new XKR beside me at the lights in the rain, engage
'launch control'. Lights change, we both floor it, I disappear while
his traction control is telling him not to be a naughty boy... :-)
Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional! :-)
Hmmm.. sounds like a lotta fun. Not as fast as my mates £12k tuned
Golf 1.8 Turbo,
Yeah right - let's try that one on wet and muddy country roads, and
also through some twisties........
but still a fine car I wouldn't mind owning one
myself. We'll see when I get my MkV GTi though. It's fast as stock,
but easily chipped and modded to give outrageous performance for a
hatch. I think we should find a nice quiet stretch of road stewart..
and see then who has the biggest... err.. fastest car :-)
In a straight line on a dry road, with the 250-270BHP chipping, the
GTI would be a match, maybe even a smidgin quicker if you have the DSG
box, but under any other conditions.............
I still like my bigger version. With its Automotive Development chip,
they say it is good for 190, and I've managed just over 180 so far in
Germany.

Only problem is, I've had it from new, and it is starting to get on a
bit. But what on earth do I replace it with? As far as I am concerned,
it is the perfect car. I've driven my mates' Ferraris, Morgan Aero,
TVR, RS4, RS6, etc etc etc.... and I still like my S4 best. My last
car was a Carrera 4, and even that didn't come close. Do I really have
to spend over a hundred grand? I don't want to.
Help!

There's a guy at work who has a Forester with a 290 horse (about 215

the Forester Turbo version (GT/XT) is pretty much a WRX in a more respectable
family car guise (all the space in the back is handy with the wife and 2 kids!)
I don't know, there is something about a white-haired pensioner driving a
hatchback that isn't quite right ...
Oi! I admit to the hair (at least I still have it!), but I'm a few
years off me bus pass, thanks very much!
Sorry, I was only using the term "white-haired pensioner" which you
used yourself in a previous post ...
If you wanted street cred, you could have got an Impreza WRX. I hear the sonic
blue colour scheme goes well with tartan caps in your part of the world ...
There *is* no street cred in a WRX if you're over forty............
Yeah, point accepted. The young 'uns running around in them ruin it for
the over 30/40 crowd.
Our local farmer cum helicopter company owner has just acquired a
Bentley Continental GT, which is a *proper* gentleman's express. Big,
brutal, and will top 200mph while you swig Krug in the back...........
But what's the fun in not driving it yourself?

Good. Got there. The reason for the claims of superior cable sound is

For the same reason someone may buy a designer T shirt at many times the

better made.

I still find it difficult to ignore this matter of perception and it's

It's all about perception.
I'm left with: 'people cannot differentiate between cables of a
similar type' as a view held by the majority on this NG.
The problem would seem to be that those who claim they can differentiate
won't undertake a properly controlled test to determine whether they really
can. Moreover, it would seem that those who have undertaken such a test
couldn't differentiate; and those who have the requisite knowledge of
physics, electronics, etc, see no technical reason for there to be audible
differences between cables that are otherwise competent.
I find it hard to draw any conclusion, other than that the whole 'golden
ears' cable thing is nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

That's not the silvery-blue one that I see twice a day, once on my way
down to Leicester in the morning, and then on my way back to Nottingham
after work is it?
Lovely looking car, but you don't realise how enormously big it is until
you get close to it

I have seen people in their 40s driving a brand new WRX ... surely a sign
of a mid-life crisis (especially if they have their windows wound down with
bass heavy music pumping from the stereo)

Absolutely! There's also quality of construction, and the exact
required compromise among speed, appearance and comfort. OTOH, being a

depreciation, so I'd argue that it's a pretty functional choice......
I don't know how the UK tax system works, but how did you get the first 8-9
grand of depreciation factored into the deal?
You buy an ex-demonstrator and haggle real hard.........
Small difference - I don't claim that my A3 *outperforms* a Scooby,
except in terms of the overall compromise mentioned above......
so a turbo charged Impreza WRX STI would outperform your A3?
In speed and handling, yes. In terms of comfort, quality and residual
value, no.

so DSG is better than a standard manual gear shift?
Yes, in every possible way.

Possibly, he's built a whacking great 'farm' house at Six Hills, but
the business is still on the A60 between Rempstone and Costock.

Indeed - it's a truly traditional Bentley. Big, brutal and
hairy-chested. Can't say I care for the rear three-quarter view
though, it has something of a fat arse. Probably so you can get lots
of golf bags in, which was what ruined the Jag XK vs the DB7.
