I'm about to buy my first set of hi-fi seperates - Acoustic Solutions from
Argos. It will have to do as a starting point. If you buy 3 AS products
you get the floorstander speakers for free but the Argos website (513/0102)
has them at being 105cm high which is taller than I'd expected. Is this
about normal for floorstander speakers?

For reference, I have Paradigm Studio/60s which are 103cm high and
Revel Studios which are 110cm high.

Sit nice and comfy in your listening chair and ask someone to measure the
distance between your ear'ole and the floor (or use some blue tack to mark
the position). If you like a performance to be just above you (stalls seat?)
or below you (balcony seat?) then choose your speakers accordingly.

My personal preference is just above my ear height and this is, grabbing a
tape measure, 880 to centre of the single driver that I use. I also think
this is very very important and can completely ruin a listening experience
if it is wrong for you.

That seems tall. The speakers are described at:

They have zero low-frequency response.

Are you sure you're spending your money wisely? If I had a budget of, say,
£250, and needed a pair of speakers, amplifier and CD or DVD player, I'd go
to Richer Sounds and buy a pair of Kef Cresta speakers for £120, whatever
amplifier they had for £80, and whatever DVD player they had for £40. (If
you're on a tight budget, it's good to use your amplifier and speakers for
TV, and computer too if possible, so you get more value from your spending.
TV and DVDs sounds *much* better through speakers that can do the job.)

With a budget of £300, I'd buy a DVD recorder from Asda for £100 instead of
the DVD player.

Yeah. It's not that they're so tall; it's that they absolutely
require a woofer. Not just a sub-woofer (80Hz) but a real woofer to
fill in below 150Hz.

Frankly, appearance is the only thing these seem to have going for
them and that's only if you find them appealing. I don't.

Mmmmm. I wouldn't go buying those items on the strength of getting free
speakers. They look more suited to a home cinema setup with a
sub-woofer providing the Bass that look so desparately lacking on the
Specs.
Take your budget along to Richersounds and actually have a listen to
what your money is going on. I'm not saying 'don't buy those
components' but have a listen before parting with your hard earned
cash.

The height of the drivers (particularly the midrange and
tweeter) should be about ear level, with you in your
preferred listening situation.

That means that the speaker needs to be at least that tall,
but it could be taller if the drivers are not mounted near
the top of the enclosure.

WRT the Argos system I would by the cd player, amplifier and DAB/FM receiver
at a total cost of £210 with the free speakers. Then, if the sound wasn't
quite up to scratch, I would put an advert in the local paper and flog the
speakers and then get my first upgrade from RS - new speakers. If the whole
Argos system sounded fine to my ears then no need.

The idea of using a dvd player and amplifier as a kind of combination
hi-fi/TV system would be ideal except for the layout of my living room which
means the TV is in the corner at a 45 degree angle. Audio speakers should
be right in front of you or so I understand?

If I got a DVD player from RS instead of a CD player I could save money that
way, but wouldn't that be inferior to a 'proper' audio cd player?

I wouldn't have thought so for low-end systems. they all have to use
mass-produced chips for D-to-A conversion, and the chips probably cost about
£1-£2.

Still, you could always buy both from Argos, listen to them, and take back
for a refund the one you don't like.

By the way, some digital radio stations are available on Freeview set-top
boxes; you don't need a DAB radio for them. As digital TV STBs are cheaper
than DAB radio receivers (odd, isn't it?) that's worth noting. The Freeview
radio stations are below.
