Got one possible source but he's "restricted" this to me..

"I'll order the PX manual if you want to split the costs, though only on two
commitments from yourself:

1. I get the original, and you get a high quality bound copy (just about
identical to the original)
2. You must promise implicitly not to copy and sell it any further.
Repairing Audiolabs is my hobby and I normally decline EVERY request for
copies of the service literature, I'm only willing to make an exception in
this case because I sold you the amp in the first place, albeit a very long
time ago now!"

Why are some people in this hobby just interested in money, if I had service
manuals I would upload to servers at no cost. And I have in the past.

I think he may mean "explicitly"...

If he does not own the copyright on the manual, then TBH any restrictions
he places on you may have no real legal basis. Indeed, it may be a
technical breach of copyright on his part to make a copy for you. Given
these points I doubt he'd get far in a court if he tried to take action
against you for making further copies. :-)

I have also made copies of some manuals, etc, available to people in the
past. Although I (sadly) have no AudioLab info, and am referring to items
which ceased manufacture some years ago.

I must confess I am puzzled by the attitudes of some manufacturers to
making service manuals and diagrams available. Mumble-mumble years ago it
was standard practice to provide these with the purchase of the item to
which they referred. The assumption was that the purchaser was entitled to
them for reference purposes, and would wish to have the information about
what they had bought.

Later on, the info could often be purchased at a price that reasonably
covered the cost of making the info available. Hence although most users
would not have it, anyone with an interest could get a copy.

Nowdays, the attitude of many makers seems to be that circuitry and service
info are almost to be regarded as 'top secret'. To me, this shows a lack of
confidence in both their purchasers, and in the quality of their designs.

FWIW I have particularly been saddened by the changes in this at Quad over
recent years. They have gone from making such info easily available to it
being almost impossible to obtain. Indeed, I have heard comments [1] that
some of the info isn't even available easily to their own UK service
people, or is not clearly and extensively documented as in the past!

[1] Which I can't confirm. All I can confirm is that getting a service
manual or full diagrams for more recent items is between 'difficult' and
'impossible'. I still do not have a service manual or diagrams on the Quad
67, despite it being long out of manufacture.

Slainte,

Jim

The answer to this problem is to only buy equipment where the
info is readily available. They would soon fall into line.

Hi Nath,
Would you happen to know how to set the preset in a 8000P?, I recently had
to replace the predrivers in mine.

TIA
Craig

No sorry I don't know, but I know someone who might. Do you want me to ask
him?

Alas, I fear that would only be the case if most people followed that
approach. In practice, though, I suspect that the vast majority of people
do not even think of asking for a service manual or even a diagram.

Also, it can be difficult if you have decided that the equipment you prefer
is from makers who do not provide the info.

Just got a reply from IAG...

"Thankyou for contacting the helpdesk.

Unfortunatly we cannot supply you with the service manuals or circuit
diagrams as this is against our company policy."

Ask them if it is also company policy to explain the reasons for their
company policy. :-)

Interesting use of "cannot" as well...

Amp has been fixed, just dry joints around the four transistors. The amp
made a funny noise, then both channels were intermittent or silent. Now ok
:-)
