For keith G - about the Buschhorns
Dear Keith,
I read your 'review' of the Buschhorns (see the bose acoustic wave post
above) and the comparison with the Loth X's and was very surprised to read
that the BH's performed, in many ways better than the Loth's.
Do you think it's the single driver, because the horns sound more natural,
or is the Buschhorn design having no financial constraints just simply
better.

OK Jim, before I answer that, have a shufti at these:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Stereo%20One.wav
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Stereo%20Two.wav
(10 Meg apiece, so not for 'dialup' types!)
Pick one as best (or least worst) and I'll tell you which it is!
(*Open mic* obviously, so they'll sound quite boxy to start off with -
'Boxy' and 'Uberboxy' then....?? :-)

No worries Jim - these recordings are pretty hopeless anyway, other than
they might serve to demonstrate a) the room acoustics which started the
whole thing off and b) that these two tracks are not too dissimilar, which
is no bad thing if you consider one of them is a commercial product from a
manufacturer whose prices go up to about 14K (I believe)!!
As to why I prefer the sound of the Buschhorns to the Loths?
It's quite simple - the Loths sound 'nasal' by comparison! They probably
have better bass but it's lost in an overall, comparative 'boxyiness' and
sounds a wee bit 'honky' to me. The interesting thing is that I find horns
do sound a bit odd for a few minutes until (as Ken Kessler said re. the
Loths) 'you get used to them' * - then I find it's impossible to go back to
'normal' speakers. (Or the ones I have to hand, at least!)
The single driver helps I'm certain and it would be interesting to build a
pair of 'bass reflex type' speakers to see if this theory holds up.
Interestingly, the Loths have a fullrange driver *and* a supertweeter yet I
think the treble on the Buschhorns is sweeter. (I might post a couple more
tracks later to demonstrate this....)
Horns are not for everyone, but if you do 'get it' with them, the clarity,
'realism' and 'immediacy' of the sound is addictive, especially on triodes
(as per the recordings)....
I'll leave the tracks up for a while in case anybody wants to guess who the
singer is - not easy!! ;-)
*Damn good subject for a PhD thesis, if ever there was!

Correct - it's not Eddy Arnold. :-)
Here's another one from the same artist. Two clues: First the bit preceding
the main track, second the disc itself is probably older than many of the
posters/lurkers here...!! (Apologies for the quality - it's the same open
mic setup, in mono 'cos the mic's gone tits-up again and normalised to get
it up to strength - IOW, ****e!)
The question is - are you/were you *cool* enough to remember him/them?
;-)
