OK, another 'Honky Tonk' comparison...
I'm expecting deliveries sometime today and therefore stuck within earshot
of the bloody doorbell on a lovely day like this, so here's another loopy
comparison....
This track ('normalised' mono MP3s) is very honky/horny to
counteract/compensate for (ie *hide*) the effects of open mic recording and
I like 'em both - one is my homebrew 2A3 amp on my homemade Pinkie speakers,
the other is the Dynavox amp on the Loths - all other considerations being
equal:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Track%20A.mp3
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Track%20B.mp3
Anybody care to state a preference if only on a 'least worst' basis?
(One here will be interested to know the cart is *a* (not *the*) Shure
V15/III....)
:-)

Think I prefer 'B' - but that's just through the computer speakers.
Sounds as though it has more body, but they both sound pretty good to me
if a little 'chesty' - could be the recording?

I said *a* V15/III not *the* V15/III...!!! ;-)
(Which is, as yet, still unfitted!!)

Its B for me, has a more extended, less strained sound to it.

OK gentleman, thanks for that. Now another *tough* one if you are up for it:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Piano%20A.mp3
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Piano%20B.mp3
(Naming convention to be ignored - may or may not be 'as before'!! ;-)
The questions here are which one sounds most like a piano (if either one
does!) and which do you prefer?
I won't reveal the results just yet but will just say that I'm looking to
see if the purported triodes/horns 'synergy' is fact or fiction. The first
thing Pat From Around The Corner said when he heard the Pinks was that they
had 'brought the triodes alive' - meaning up 'til then he hadn't rated them,
I suppose!! ;-)
Also, *fact* - the Pinks are sounding better now than when they were brand
new (more bass) - wobbling my theories about speaker 'break-in' a bit!! (I'm
no less susceptible to 'psychology' than the next bloke, but this has got
bugger-all to do with building them - they are not even my 'ultimate goal'
speakers!! :-)

Anyway, never mind the 'Lilies' (Pinks) - the 'Clarissas' are waiting in the
wings:

OK - a bit less obvious this time, but I'm switching to A.
First thing I did was check the normalization, though, and knocked
half a dB off A to bring it better into line with B.

Mmm - 'A' I think, a little less peaky, again more rounded.

OK, I must congratulate both you and Don on your excellent taste and
judgement - you *both* picked the triodes/pinkies *both* times!! :-)
I had done a third pair:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Orleans%20A.mp3
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Orleans%20B.mp3
But they are so overwhelmingly 'toilety' from the open mic recording they
are not pleasant - I'm pleased to say they sound quite a bit better 'live'!
Anyway, as I've done them, I've posted them and now forgotten which was
which - I think A is the triodes/pinkies!!
Many thanks for the feedback. Needless to say I'm delighted - I already
prefer the pinkies to the Loths myself, it's nice to get that 'backed up' to
a degree!! (Not exhaustive due to the different amps I know, but enough of
an indicator for me!)

Well, you know what you need to do now - swap the speakers on the amps
and see which way the preference goes. Although of course this is
going to be 99.9% speakers.
