Default please help! need to connect speaker wire to dvd

Hi, this might sound silly but I have no electronics knowledge at all!
My boyfriend and I have just moved and are trying to set up our system.
He has no internet access right now, so has asked me to find out some
answers but I have no idea what I am doing. Hopefully someone can help?
We bought a 5.1 speaker set which has normal wire that you connect to
the speakers (no connectors). The problem is, we need to connect the
speakers to the DVD player, but the wire has no connectors. My
boyfriend asked me to find out if he can connect the wire to a Coaxial
connector to plug into the DVD.
If not how else do we hook up the system?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Stella

If the DVD has no connectors for the speakers then you can't.
You may need an amplifier to take the signal from the dvd (two phono
connectors)
The amplifier will have the speaker connectors that you need.
if you are stuck go to an electrical shop and ask.

Don't most "5.1 speaker sets" have amplifiers, either in the woofer box
or in
a separate control box? In which case the OP needs a coax or toslink cable.

What make of speaker set is it? It might have an amplifier built in.
