Whilst the Goodmans will be an adequate performer, the internal build quality is reflected in the price. It has loads of features compared to other units, but a very small price tag. That should tell you all that you need to know about what's behind the brushed aluminium. The phrase " all fur coat and no knickers " comes to mind ... I really don't know what the " once warmed up " nonsense in the review is all about. If anything has got to warm up in a fully solid state system, then something is sadly wrong with the design. This probably came from the perceived (but sometimes real?) need for the resistors in the R-2R ladder network to all temperature stabilise to ensure linearity in the D-A conversion process. No doubt believed by all journos to apply solidly in all cases, and written in the mantra. After 30mins the frequency and dynamic response of my system at various measurement points may have improved on paper. In the same 30mins, my hearing is sucessfully shot to hell and I'm awaiting Sony to bring out some funky hifi hearing aids.... -- Adrian C |

Cheers Happy xmas If you want something a bit different, louder than a micro system and low budget take a look at some of the "one box" cinema systems. Comes with loads of speakers, a sub woofer, plays CD's/MP3's and of course DVD's, and have a radio tuner as well. You'll need a TV of course! Richer sounds has these systems starting from £100 (Sharp HTM700 or JVC THS33R) - best download user manuals to check facilities such as radio as Richer's webmonkeys don't do a good job describing such on site. -- Adrian C |

In general, I would say that the prices of these mini and micro systems have pretty much stabilized over the last couple of years, to the point where you can make a fairly sound judgement as to what you're buying, by its retail price tag. A unit costing £150 may not be ' twice as good ' as one costing £75, but is, never-the-less, likely be at least significantly better in the quality stakes - although interestingly, not necessarily in performance. There is still an element of name in the makeup of the price. For instance, a unit from Sony or Hitachi, is likely to be more expensive than a similar offering from say Thomson. Thomson is a lesser known name, but actually, the build quality of their kit is pretty fair. Certainly on a par with some of the lower priced offerings from the " names ". In summary, if I was in your position, I would stick with one of the bigger names - Sony, Hitachi, JVC, even Aiwa, which is now a part of Sony anyway. Go for something in the mid price bracket £120 to 150, that has all of the features that you want. Listen to your choice working if possible, including the tuner, and try to go for one with fairly " solid " feeling speakers. If anything lets these small systems down, it's the speakers. Allow yourself a bit of styling for a few quid, if you want. One with a nice metal front, and colourful VF display, will probably not perform, or be of any higher build quality than a plastic cased unit with a basic LC display, but will be more expensive. All I've probably done is further confuse you ( sorry !! ) but it's a very muddy subject. Hope some of what I've said makes sense, and is of use to you. Arfa |

Actually I think I'm following your train of thought. Basically have a look around listen to it, make sure it has what I need\want and make sure the speakers up up to scratch. In a nutshell. Although there is the grey area. But stick with a good brand name. I guess to an extent you pay your money and take a chance on a level. Thanks again for the help. Happy New year all |
