I know this may prompt cry's of "but you like SET's why do you want
one of those", but I don't suppose anyone here in the UK has a unwanted
HP
334 or such like that they would consider exchanging for a sensible
sum of money? I have been watching on ebay for some time, but can't
talk myself into paying the shipping from the states where they all
seem to be.

or perhaps an HP/Agilent 8903B or one of their dynamic signal analysers
from someone like Livingston Hire. None are cheap options though! HP334's?
They bring back memories.

The 334A is certainly a cheap option. One does not see
them often, but they go for about UKP50.
I had two. I bought a third for spares, and
it turned out to be better than the original pair:-)

The Ferograph is more expensive but a more
comprehensive unit, and therefore a better buy IMO.

If you can find one, go for a Ferrograph RTS1. It is an all-in-one
audio measuring set, includes distortion and level, has a low
distortion oscillator and can measure drift and wow and flutter. They
were made in the UK, so you won't have to pay shipping charges.
Measures down to 0.1% full-scale, so if the distortion is below what
you can measure, you don't need to worry about it.

Yes I've got one of they. Make me an offer I can't refuse;-)).....

You'd be surprised what they go for on Ebay. Especially if in good
cosmetic condition as most are rather battered. And with the optional
balancing/monitoring unit.

BTW, I've scanned and OCR'd the instruction manuals for both units as most
are supplied secondhand without. The circuit diagrams are best photocopied
to double size. I've cleaned up both the circuit diagrams but not the
other parts and exploded views which were all pretty poor on my originals.

I suppose a further option would be a PC based audio spectrum analyser. I
don't know much about them apart from their existence. I would guess that
the s/w may handle THD & maybe also intemod as well. I don't know if a
programmable source is included, an option or separate. Intermod would
obviously require 2 tones.

Some look to use your existing sound card for FFT based analysis using its
ADC. Bit depth will have a big impact on resolution.

FWIW At home if I want to analyse something I tend to record onto CD-R,
then load the data onto my computer and analyse it there.

Bit depth will have a big impact on resolution.

Erm... The number of bits per sample may have an effect of the dynamic
range / noise floor. However provided the input is dithered and you have a
fair number of samples you should be able to get well over 100dB range
without too much problem. e.g. being 32k samples with 16bits/sample.

I'd hope that a dynamic range of 100dB would suffice for most concerns
about distortion in domestic audio kit. :-)

The frequency resolution will depend on the number of samples.

Slainte,

Jim

I have a 331A that is surplus to requirements if you are interested.

I am watching a 334 on ebay at the moment, but, yes I am interested,
drop me a mail letting me know what you had mind.
