Pioneer PL20 Mk2 turntable, warbly sound problem - need advice

Hello all,

I'm having a game with this deck. I have oiled it where it suggests, I
have given it a new belt, I have tightened down the mounting screws for
the motor and still the thing (only sometimes) gives off this sound
like a warped recording.

I can see the drive wheel through the holes in the platter wobbling.
But it only does it sometimes. I played one side of an album last
night, played perfect, flipped her over and this problem starts.

Basically its an intermitant problem that makes the drive wheel wobble.
You can put your hand on the spring loaded base plate and feel the
whole thing wobbling.

At first i thought it was the belt dragging on the speed changer arm
mechanism but i had to rule that out when like i say i played one side,
turned it over without changing the speed and it then started.

There has to be an easy fix for this, if it plays perfectly sometimes,
please advise.

remove drive wheel, (i presume you meant idler wheel) clean and re-lube
it's pulley/shaft. also check main platter bearing for wear and dried
lubrication. what condition is the rubber in?

I have noticed a small screw on the idler wheel, i wondered if this had
worked loose and was slipping ocassionally on the shaft. The rubber
band is new. thanks -b.

The only other remedy i can think of is to replace the motor, I don't
suppose there is too many of those kicking around, unles someone is
breaking one up.

The central pin in the middle seems to spin freely without any
resistance, as does the idler wheel, but surely it has to be that
idler, there is no other moving parts connected to the platter.

The only other problem i could think of would be the power to the motor
fluctuating, is there a component controlling the amount of power
directed to the motor?

After looking at it again, i can not be sure the idler is wobbling or
if it is a trick of the eye watching the holes throught the platter.
When the rubber band is off and the platter stationary, it would apear
to spin without wobble, but then again it may only happen when it is
under load, if i press my finger against it whilst the idler is
spinning it would seem to be ok, but then i'm not sure whether i would
detect such slight changes in speed.

Any more advise out there other than binnit? I am not ready to give up
on it yet.

Jim
