Hi

I've just been thinking about getting my son an inexpensive (£100) system,
and found a reasonably good deal on a Panasonic SC-AK300 (5 CD, Twin tape,
Digital tuner, £117). My question is, does this fit in between the SC-AK210
and SC-AK410, or is it a discontinued and inferior model?
What other low-end systems are worthy of consideration? He really want
something like his sister's, i.e. two tape decks (I'm not arguing with him,
but know that he'll probably never use one, let alone two!). Are they all
much of a muchness when the price tag is this low?

Hi - I'm not familiar with models you're looking at, although I do have a
£200 Panasonic SA-PM15 cd/tape/radio midi thing that has served very well
for about 10 years - it's even, they say, bi-amped! Superb tuner and tape. I
did buy an Aiwa £130 job (Which? recommended) for my brother a couple of
years ago, and he wrecked it in 3 weeks. I took it back for him, and it
seemed he'd been using the cassette drawers as an ashtray - the technician
showed me the cigarette butts. But he'd generally trashed it in any case -
he's 36 btw ;-).

I think in general it's an idea to have a listen and particularly feel -
you'll get a good idea what will snap off, and it might sound daft but there
does seem to be a correlation between speaker weight and sound quality.
Steer clear of 'concert' settings and go for bass/treble. And, at least from
my experience, explain to the user the noble art of ashtray use.
