Default Headphones for home hifi (not portable)

My Sennheiser HD480 Classic IIs have just bitten the dust.
Well, the wire on one side has gone and I can't see the
repair cost being worth a fairly old pair of headphones
(though I'm willing to be told differently if it includes a
decent repairer, preferably in Bristol...)

What would be a decent upgrade? I use Sony separates (MD,
tuner, amp, cassette deck) with an old but worthy Marantz
CD75 deck, Rega Planar 3, Denon DR-M24 cassette deck. All
modest stuff, but decent quality and the HD480s did seem to
do it all justice.

Would going for the HD600s be overkill?

Thanks,
Jim

I've got some HD497s and they more than do justice to my LP12 & Marantz
DR6000 setup, especially for about £40.

I think you can buy replacement 'wires' for the 480's check the Sennheiser
site

There's a thread further down about advice on Sennheiser headphones and it
seems you can get a good deal on the 600's
